First Hike Project Inc. is an Australian not-for-profit charity that takes newly arrived youth from refugee and migrant backgrounds on overnight hiking and camping adventures to make them feel more welcome and at home in their new country.
We have five active hiking groups around Australia that are 100% volunteer operated. Each group has a large volunteer crew creating, planning and running our hiking adventures, all of which is overseen and managed by state-based coordinator groups. These coordinator groups are three-person strong and provide leadership and support to our volunteers to ensure we can safely deliver our hiking adventures.
The ideal candidate will be a resourceful problem solver, a champion team player, a master motivator, a clear communicator and a competent volunteer wrangler as well as being passionate and empathetic to the plight of those seeking asylum.
Hiking and camping expertise and experience will be looked on favourably, but they are not essential for the role. We have two hiking season per year and each lasts 2-3 months depending on weather and resources. Each season’s hiking calendar ranges from 2-6 hikes and is solely dependent on resources and volunteer availability. Time commitment of this role ranges from very little in the off seasons to 8-10 hours per week in season.
