First Nations Legal & Research Services

First Nations supports Victorian Traditional Owners prepare and lodge native title and settlement act claims and make associated agreements.

Our work is evidence based with our research team providing objective and independent insight into Traditional Owners' connection to Country through primary anthropological and historical research.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

This is a broad-ranging creative design and editing role servicing two organisations.

Working closely with the Campaigns & Advocacy Advisor, the Digital Communications Officer is responsible for delivering on the external communications requirements of the Federation and First Nations.

KEY DUTIES:

  • Develop highly engaging and unique communications across all platforms including social media, web, media, advertising, publication, videography etc.
  • Maintain a proactive and impactful social media output and web presence, working with colleagues to develop appropriate information and strengthen the Federation and First Nations’ advocacy and knowledge sharing.
  • Maintain currency of websites for both First Nations and Federation.
  • Work collaboratively across multiple teams to provide high level communications advice for the delivery of communications that support the goals and values of the Federation, First Nations and Victorian Traditional Owners.
  • Identify emerging risks and opportunities for Traditional Owners and position items into the media landscape in accordance with established policy objectives, strategic plans and communications strategies.
  • Liaise with traditional media producers and journalists to publicise our work, participate in the public debate and give voice to the rights, interests and aspirations of Traditional Owners.
  • Other duties as required.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • An ability to create original content. Photography, photo editing skills and video-editing experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Premiere Pro) or similar photo/video editing software. Experience with various social media platforms – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn. Web design basics
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Copy writing and editing
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment while managing competing priorities.
  • Experience pitching stories to traditional media (radio, print, television).
  • Familiarity with strategic communications – Political campaigns, social movements, theories of change
  • Knowledge and experience working with the Victorian Aboriginal Community.
  • Driver’s Licence
