The Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA) is the national peak multicultural body representing people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. FECCA's role is to advocate and promote issues on behalf of its constituency to Government, business, and the broader community. At the heart of FECCA’s work is promoting multiculturalism, embodied in equitable policies and non discriminatory practices for all Australians, regardless of their cultural, linguistic, ethnic, racial or religious backgrounds. FECCA strives to ensure that the needs and aspirations of various cohorts of Australia’s culturally and linguistically diverse population are heard by policy and decision makers, as well as the broader public.

Key Position Objectives

The Senior Communications Officer is responsible for the development and implementation of FECCA’s communications strategy with a strong focus on communicating FECCA’s key policy messages to internal and external stakeholders. This includes developing content and keeping stakeholders informed about FECCA’s work by developing communications products such as; newsletters, social media posts, digital content (website and social media) and publications; as well as media monitoring and responding to media requests. You will work closely with staff to ensure that FECCA’s communication is clear, engaging, timely, and reflects our strategic priorities.

Reporting Relationship

The position reports to the CEO and works collaboratively with the policy team.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Strengthen FECCA’s communications capacity, including the effective use of various communication channels including social media.
  • Support the policy and projects team with tailored communication plans to meet the objective of each project.
  • Liaise with the CEO and Chairperson to respond to media requests and organise media releases, interviews, speaking notes, and raising FECCA’s profile through proactive approach.
  • Manage and engage with FECCA’s website and social media channels; update, write and curate relevant content; build FECCA’s social media presence with innovative techniques and content.
  • Develop and implement promotional campaigns for FECCA’s projects, events, and publications.
  • Ensure consistent branding and key messages in all FECCA communications.
  • Write, edit, proofread and design publications, collateral, web copy and social media content for all online channels and print and digital formats.
  • Work closely with the CEO providing advice on media and communications issues and related activities as identified by the CEO, including support for FECCA events and representation of FECCA at such events.
  • Provide communications advice on selected policy areas impacting Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, including providing intellectual, analytical and creative input into developing and implementing communications activities relating to FECCA’s efforts in promoting multiculturalism.

Selection Criteria

Essential Criteria:

  • Demonstrated experience writing media releases with short notice
  • Demonstrated experience using the media cycle to deliver maximum impact for key announcements
  • Demonstrated experience working with TV, radio and newspaper journalists to respond to media enquiries and develop stories, as well as good contacts with key media organisations and journalists
  • Demonstrated experience managing social media and creating digital content using graphic design and video editing skills
  • Demonstrated copy writing experience such as newsletters, reports and speech writing
  • Experience in using desktop publishing applications such as Mailchimp and Wordpress
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills and experience, including exemplary written skills demonstrated through media releases, correspondence and/or report drafting.
  • Good consultative skills, including the ability to deal with tact with a wide range of stakeholders, many of whom may be of culturally, linguistically, or religiously diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and dynamic work environment, highly self-motivated, self-driven and flexible
  • Ability to work professionally as part of a team in a positive and supportive manner.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Tertiary qualification in PR or communication and/or health or social science (with a communications work history)
  • Understanding of government processes, working with NGOs, and the advocacy and policy development process.
  • An understanding of a broad range of issues impacting Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, particularly women, youth and children, older Australians, people living in regional and remote areas, new and emerging communities, and people with disability.
