The Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA) is the national peak body for multicultural advocacy. At the heart of FECCA’s work is promoting multiculturalism, embodied in equitable policies and non‑discriminatory practices for all Australians, regardless of their cultural, linguistic, ethnic, racial or religious backgrounds. Toward this end, FECCA strives to ensure that the needs and aspirations of various cohorts of Australia’s culturally and linguistically diverse population are heard by policy and decision makers, as well as the broader public.

Key Position Objectives

The Policy Officer–Health & Ageing provides critical support role in implementing FECCA’s advocacies on health and ageing. This includes stakeholder engagement, research, events organising, producing reports and communications materials.

Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Support routine and regular consultations with FECCA member organisations and partners, together with other consultations on specific issues with relevant organisations.
  2. Provide technical support in developing submissions to parliamentary committees and Department and sector inquiries.
  3. Support the development of productive relationships with: governments; relevant public and private sector and community organisations; and researchers in fields relevant to health and ageing.
  4. Provide technical support in mobilising the Positive CALD Ageing Network (PCAN) and maintaining FECCA representations in various reference groups, advisory groups, alliances and committees.
  5. Organise the annual PCAN Forum and other relevant events.
  6. Develop content for the PCAN e-newsletter and other relevant communications.
  7. Maintain online database of resources relevant to health and ageing.
  8. Support implementation of research projects and development of outreach materials.
  9. Assist in monitoring budget, including reporting and acquittal of relevant funding agreements or grants and the drafting of further grant proposals.

Applicants should be aware that at times this role may involve interstate travel.

Selection Criteria

Essential Criteria:

  1. Demonstrated understanding or lived experience of issues of importance to people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.
  2. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the capacity to adapt to the needs of a range of audiences, including people from CALD backgrounds.
  3. Good consultative skills, including the ability to deal with tact with a wide range of stakeholders, many of whom may be of culturally, linguistically, or religiously diverse backgrounds.
  4. Good analytical skills and demonstrated ability to engage with quantitative and qualitative research evidence to produce high-quality reports and advocacy materials.
  5. Demonstrated experience in project implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
  6. Ability to work in a fast paced and dynamic work environment, highly self-motivated, self-driven and flexible
  7. Ability to work professionally as part of a team in a positive and supportive manner.

Desirable

  1. A tertiary qualification in a field related to social, health or public policy.
  2. Previous experience working in CALD social policy or health service delivery.
  3. Understanding of government processes, working with NGOs, and the advocacy and policy development process.
