The FBEU represents professional firefighters in NSW. We are a high-density union with a proud, militant history and culture and a highly democratic structure. FBEU Members work in diverse jobs and face a variety of industrial challenges.

We are a Union run by and for its members.

FBEU Industrial Officers provide advice, support and representation to members both individually and collectively. Industrial Officers also support our elected leaders and other staff to protect and improve the working lives of firefighters in NSW.

We are looking for suitably skilled and qualified Firefighters to join our team as part time Junior Industrial Officers, to provide additional capacity and assistance to the full time staff, State Secretary and State Committee when required.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Preparing communications to members regarding various industrial issues
  • Carrying out industrial research
  • Interpreting and applying relevant Awards, policies and legislation
  • Assisting and advising members on workplace and industrial issues/disputes
  • Attending consultative meetings and negotiating outcomes to disputes or workplace issues/changes on behalf of the membership
  • Providing advice and assistance to union delegates to advance and resolve disputes
  • Effectively and appropriately using workplace information systems (including filing, internet, email and electronic calendar)

SELECTION CRITERIA – ESSENTIAL

  • Sound working knowledge of FRNSW policies and procedures.
  • Good understanding of the current Fire fighting awards.
  • Commitment to trade union principles;
  • Excellent communication skills.

SELECTION CRITERIA – DESIRABLE

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent
  • Legal or Industrial Relations qualifications.
  • Demonstrated experience in advocacy before tribunals
  • Experience in the NSW Industrial Relations System.
  • Campaign skills (including a demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the principles of organising).

PAY AND CONDITIONS:

Pay is commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience.

Hours will vary depending on current workload but by agreement will initially be between 8 and 24 hours per week.

Working remotely will be an option. Our office is based in Surry Hills.
