The Organisation:

The Family Co. is a not-for-profit organisation which aims to support and strengthen the capacity of families within our community by providing programs and services designed to contribute to the promotion and maintenance of safety and well-being amongst all family members.

The Program

The Aboriginal Family Worker Program provides practical and emotional support and assistance through caseworker services to Aboriginal families with children who are experiencing difficulties in their lives.

The Position

The Aboriginal Child and Family Worker provides high quality culturally supportive child focused, child and family casework in accordance with the The Family Co. model of care and in alignment with the business and strategic plans of the organisation. The Aboriginal Family Worker is responsible for managing a caseload of clients, provision of culturally supportive casework and group programs for children and families in line with the program guidelines. The Aboriginal Family Worker is required to maintain accurate client records and work within The Family Co. ’s Policy and Procedures. The Aboriginal Family Worker is also required to contribute to the ongoing evidence based program enhancement.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake client assessments for families referred to the Family Support Program
  • Deliver culturally supportive individual casework, of varying intensities, to Aboriginal families with children who been referred to The Family Co. for support in line with DCJ contractual requirements and The Family Co.’s policy and procedures
  • Deliver group programs to children and/or families that have been referred to The Family Co. for support in line with DCJ contractual requirements and The Family Co.’s policy and procedures
  • Draw on cultural knowledge to help inform develop service delivery, to ensure programs, and resources are culturally appropriate
  • Accurately record and maintain client records on data recording systems as per The Family Co. policy and procedures and program guidelines
  • Provide crisis support and referrals to families if assessed as required
  • Work collaboratively with relevant external services to ensure best outcomes for clients and build strong relationships to support and strengthen cultural connections
  • Follow mandatory child protection guidelines to report risk of significant harm concerns about if any concerns about a child or young person are identified during contact with clients

Essential Knowledge and Skills

Essential:

  1. Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  2. Tertiary qualifications in Social Work or relevant degree
  3. Detailed knowledge and understanding of issues that Aboriginal children and families may face require targeted early intervention support
  4. Demonstrated experience providing casework support children and families
  5. Understanding of and ability to work from a trauma-informed practice model
  6. Excellent organisation and administration skills and the ability to accurately maintain client files
  7. Ability to utilise outcomes and evidence to refine develop and refine service delivery
  8. High level experience utilising various IT applications
  9. Excellent communication skills with the ability build strong relationships and networks within the Aboriginal Community
  10. Ability to work within The Family Co.'s policies and procedures
  11. Current WWCC and Police check

Desirable:

  1. Trained to deliver evidence based parenting programs
  2. Drivers licence
