About the Organisation

The Indigenous Consumer Assistance Network Ltd (ICAN) is a not-for-profit organisation based in Cairns, North Queensland. ICAN provides consumer education, advocacy and financial counselling assistance services for all Indigenous Australians. Our vision is 'Empowering Indigenous Consumers.'

The Position

Based in our Townsville office, ICAN Financial Counselling Support Officer will develop their skills in financial counselling to assist people experiencing financial difficulty. While completing the Diploma of Financial Counselling you will gain on-job training within an experienced and supportive team environment. You will use your experience and growing knowledge to deliver financial counselling and capability services.

Successful Candidate

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the successful candidate will be willing to undertake and enrol in the Diploma of Financial Counselling, which is fully funded by the organisation. You will have a passion and determination for working with marginalised communities to empower them in achieving financial wellbeing.

Selection Criteria

  • Previous experience working in the community sector.
  • Understanding and working knowledge of the relevant issues impacting on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Ability to engage with and use effective and appropriate communication to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and understand cultural protocols.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and use autonomy when required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Desirable

  • Financial Literacy Education skill set.
  • Experience in advocating for people experiencing disadvantage and vulnerable circumstances in the community.
