About Ngaanyatjarra Council

Ngaanyatjarra Council Aboriginal Corporation (NCAC) was incorporated in 1981 with the aim of supporting the development of all Ngaanyatjarra people. At the core of this work was assisting the Ngaanyatjarra Communities to be strong and sustainable with reliable essential services, air transport, bookkeeping, agency and road transport, fuel distribution, health services, community services and improved housing.

The Ngaanyatjarra Council represents the interests of around 2000 Ngaanyatjarra, Pintupi and Pitjantjatjara people, living in 12 communities in the Central Desert region of Western Australia.

Today, Ngaanyatjarra Council is one of the largest Indigenous Corporation in Australia and has grown to be the major representative body for Ngaanyatjarra people.

About the Opportunity

Ngaanyatjarra Council currently has an opportunity for a Community Coordinator to join their THRIVE team, working in communities on the Ngaanyatjarra Lands. You'll be predominantly based in Warburton, with regular travel, occasionally overnight, to other communities in the region.

The THRIVE program is a State Government-funded initiative, aimed at empowering individuals and families to improve their life skills, increase their ability to manage their household independently, help people navigate and link up with support services and programs. The THRIVE approach is holistic, with a strong focus on early intervention looking at the wider needs of the individual.

Reporting to the Tenancy Manager and working closely with Ngaanyatjarra Council's Housing Officers, you'll be responsible for promoting healthy home living skills and positive tenancy practices for public housing residents in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands.

Your day to day duties will include (but will not be limited to):

• Meeting regularly with Ngaanyatjarra residents to provide advice and education regarding property standards, tenant liability, and the rights and responsibilities of public housing tenants;
• Modelling and providing education for residents in supported housing to improve their life skills and participate fully in their communities;
• Identifying potentially untreated or unreported healthcare needs, referring clients to local clinics and ensuring any relevant health issues are recorded;
• Undertaking home assessments and developing detailed service care plans for a steady caseload of THRIVE clients;
• Reporting any repairs needed on tenanted homes to the Maintenance Administration Officer; and
• Organising Community Clean-Ups of yards and community common areas.

About You

Ngaanyatjarra Council is open to candidates from a range of backgrounds, including roles in the community sector, public housing, or working with low socio-economic individuals. A qualification in social work, community development or a related field would be a bonus.

Any experience working in remote areas or with Aboriginal communities will be highly regarded, though not essential provided you have the confidence and resilience to work in an undeniably challenging environment. You will need to be highly flexible and comfortable handling environmental issues, such as heat, dust or dirt.

Importantly, you'll be a collaborative team player with outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to adapt your communication style to work effectively with people from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds.

You will also need to be self-motivated and capable of working autonomously, and possess the interpersonal skills and cultural awareness necessary to build rapport with both local residents and dispersed coworkers.

Please note: You will need a current, unrestricted Driver's Licence, and be comfortable travelling to neighbouring communities using unsealed roads, by 4WD.
