About the Organisation

Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia (ALSWA) is currently the largest community based Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander legal organisation in Australia. It provides legal aid services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples throughout Western Australia in accordance with grant conditions imposed by the Commonwealth Department of the Attorney General.

ALSWA provides a 24 hour, seven day a week, custody notification service (CNS) for all Aboriginal people detained in a police facility in Western Australia.

The CNS provides a culturally competent and thorough welfare service complemented by access to necessary legal advice.

About the Opportunity

Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia (ALSWA) has a full-time opportunity for a Custody Notification Lawyer to join their team.

Reporting to the Managing Lawyer, you will be responsible for providing legal advice and welfare-based services for Aboriginal people detained in custody throughout Western Australia.

This is a truly unique opportunity to provide emergency legal advice and support directly to those in custody.

Please note: This role does not require you to appear or represent in a court capacity.

This role also requires you to work flexible hours to cover a 24 hour, seven day, a week roster. You will have the ability to work from home when covering these shifts outside of the normal (8am-5pm) working hours.

In exchange for your hard work and dedication, you will be rewarded with an attractive remuneration circa $57,000 - $62,000 for those on a restricted practice certificate and $65,000 - $94,000 for those on an unrestricted practice certificate plus super.
