About the Organisation

Katherine Women’s Crisis Centre (KWCC) is a well-established not-for-profit organisation that provides crisis accommodation and related support services to women and children escaping domestic and family violence in Katherine and other remote communities throughout the 'Top End' of the Northern Territory.

Staff provide personalised support for women to develop their own safety plans and strategies to keep safe, delivering education on the cycle of violence and its impact on children, as well as living skills and other practical information. The centre also provides outreach services to women who are ready to leave accommodation services or who have been referred through the Family Safety Framework, ensuring that continued, ongoing support is available.

About the Opportunity

Katherine Women's Crisis Centre (KWCC) has a newly created opportunity for a Children's Counsellor to join their team in Katherine, NT on a full-time basis.

Reporting to the Executive Officer, you will be providing direct counselling support to children affected by domestic violence, conducting assessments and working in partnership with families to support the best possible conditions for child development, safety and stability.

Your other key duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Using a strengths-based approach to engage children and families, working together in order to support them in gaining maximum value from the program;
  • Assessing children to determine individual counselling, family and group work needs;
  • Taking a collaborative approach to program development, working with local and regional organisations to meet the identified needs of community and client groups;
  • Representing and advocating for children within networks and the service system; and
  • Ensuring that case notes, records and client information is maintained in an accurate, confidential and timely manner, both manually and as part of the electronic client management system.

About You

To be considered for this role, you will need demonstrated experience in providing trauma-informed counselling to children impacted by domestic violence, with a tertiary qualification in Social Work or a related social and community services discipline, such as Family, Play, Art, or Music Therapy.

You will be a personable and empathetic communicator, confident initiating and delivering highly effective group work, and capable of engaging families and children of varying ages, stages and situations.

With the computer literacy to learn and use a range of computer software, you will be well-versed in writing high level case notes and preparing reports, and have the organisational skills to effectively manage your time and client load.

It is crucial that you understand the gendered nature of violence against women and its impact on children, including the impact on neurological and psychosocial development, as well as the diversity in experience of family violence.

Most importantly, you will be driven by a passion for improving the lives of children and families in remote communities, with a commitment to supporting vulnerable community groups.

Please note: You will need to hold or be willing to obtain a current National Police Check and Working with Children (OCHRE) Card. You will also need a current Driver's License.
