Are you an early-career researcher passionate about politics and social policy? Essential is one of Australia's leading strategic communications agencies and we are looking for a dynamic, inquisitive and detailed-focussed researcher with experience in academic, advocacy or market research to join our Melbourne team, focusing on quantitative research. You will play a central role in compiling the fortnightly Guardian Essential report diving deep into political attitudes, work on bespoke projects for Essential's diverse group of clients and work with directors to adapt emerging technologies to our research practise.

About the role:

As our Research Consultant, you will play a critical role in ensuring our polling runs smoothly. Your duties will include scripting and checking surveys, writing and checking reports and presentations, developing charts and tables, and analysing data. You may also have the opportunity to assist in the booking, recruitment and administration of qualitative research.

The range of clients and issues on which you'll work will help you build your career in social research, as well as helping to win serious and lasting change on behalf of some great clients.

As a Research Consultant, your work will be guided under the direction of our Research Director.

Key selection criteria

  1. At least 1 years’ professional experience in a busy research, data analysis or academic role desired but not essential
  2. Tertiary qualification in mathematics, statistics, psychology or political science preferred
  3. Good writing skills, including the ability to clearly and effectively communicate quantitative results.
  4. Excellent organisational capabilities, with a flexible approach and proven ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities
  5. Solid interpersonal and communication skills with a personable yet professional demeanour and be adept at developing relationships with various levels of staff
  6. Exceptional attention to detail
  7. Proactive and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with conflicting deadlines
  8. Ability to confidently provide timely and accurate support to senior staff, including Directors
  9. Experience with statistical software (Q or SPSS) and in developing high quality and attractive presentations in PowerPoint or similar
  10. A good understanding of the progressive social and political environment within which Essential works and a commitment to its values.

We are currently trialling a hybrid system for working from home and in the office, and this is very likely to continue in the future.
