  • Opportunity for one or two regular work from home days per week if desired, at least 3 days working from our office in North Melbourne expected.

Who we are:

  • Ellen was elected in 2014 as the first lower house Greens MP in the Victorian Parliament. She was re-elected for second and third terms in 2018 and 2022. Ellen is the Deputy Leader of the Victorian Greens and her portfolios include climate, environment and forests.

We pride ourselves on bringing a positive attitude, good organisation, and great attention to detail to our work.

The role is responsible for:

  • Advising Ellen on her portfolios, which include climate, environment and forests. This includes:
    • Building relationships with key staff in environment and climate NGOs and other stakeholders, keeping them up to date on our work, understanding what their priorities are, and sensitively managing these relationships.

    • Keeping on top of what is coming up in Parliament, including legislation and other tactics, writing speeches, developing amendments to legislation and working with other staff to make sure Ellen has everything she needs for Parliament.
    • This role will also include helping to communicate what we do in Parliament to supporters and constituents. You will work with Ellen’s Senior Communications Adviser and other Victorian Greens staff to do this.
  • Planning and executing issue campaigns (online and offline) on climate and environment policy issues, including developing the strategy (with Ellen’s Senior Communications Adviser and other Greens staff), planning and executing tactics, developing messaging and supporting staff across the Vic Greens to execute these campaigns.
  • Supporting the Senior Adviser with administrating Ellen’s office budgets, including processing invoices and timesheets.
  • Other duties as required, including representing Ellen at events, supporting other Vic Greens MPs, supporting the other roles in Ellen’s team, answering the phone, helping constituents, responding to correspondence, posting on Ellen’s social media, keeping on top of the events of the day, and more.

This role requires:

  • Values that align with the Greens’ values of social justice, environmental sustainability and peace and non-violence.
  • Experience running issues-based campaigns - either through non-profit organisations, campaigning organisations or in a progressive political environment.
  • Experience in climate and/or environment policy or campaigns.
  • Excellent written skills. You will do a lot of writing in this role, including speeches, web copy, supporter emails and policy analysis.
  • Excellent attention to detail and great organisation skills (you’ll have to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines).
  • The ability to maintain a friendly and approachable manner with people of all backgrounds and personalities and develop and maintain strong relationships even under pressure.
  • The ability to manage a diverse array of stakeholders towards an outcome.
  • The capacity to comprehend complex issues and quickly adapt to changing circumstances at short-notice.
  • The ability to maintain strict confidentiality on all issues associated with the office and your duties as an adviser.
  • Someone who is a ‘go-getter’, likes to achieve outcomes and is flexible. We are a small team who all often have to ‘pitch-in’ to get things done towards our goals.
  • People from diverse backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. We understand this role includes many different elements. Even if you don’t have all the experience necessary, we encourage you to apply if you have a ‘let’s get things done’ attitude, good writing, researching and communication skills, a commitment to Greens values, the ability to work well with others and build relationships, and a willingness to learn quickly.
