Elizabeth Morgan House Aboriginal Women's Service

THE ORGANISATION

EMHAWS was established as Victoria’s first Aboriginal women’s refuge and peak body in Victoria for Aboriginal women and their children in the 1970’s. We are proudly an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation and have been in operation since 1976. EMHAWS takes direction and works consultatively with the community in all aspects of our services. Central to our work and business is the aim to provide advocacy and support for the empowerment of Aboriginal women, children, young people and the wider community.

Our vision is to work together with Aboriginal Women within their communities to ensure safe and culturally strong futures for our women, children and youth.

EMHAWS are committed in advancing the International Human Rights principles for our women and their children, especially through observance of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples 2003.

EMHAWS delivers specialist Family Violence services based in Melbourne.

EMHAWS has recently launched its new strategic plan and has been working to develop an ambitious future plan for EMHAWS. This will allow us to fulfil our vision to work together with Aboriginal Women within their communities to ensure safe and culturally strong futures for our women, children and youth and honour the work of our Aunties in establishing Elizabeth Morgan House.

Our 2022-2028 Strategic Plan sets us on a path to further grow and become a leading voice for Victorian Aboriginal women and children. Over the coming 5 to 8 years part of EMH’s strategy is accommodating further growth – in service delivery, our programs and advocacy.
