Advocate - Diversity and Inclusion

Elder Rights Advocacy

About Us

Elder Rights Advocacy (ERA) is a statewide, Victorian non-profit organisation established in 1990. We are a member of the national Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) delivering the National Aged Care Advocacy Program (NACAP).

Our advocacy, information, community education and elder abuse prevention covers all forms of care for older people, with a focus on Commonwealth-funded home care and residential care. We also deliver the Aged Care Navigator trial and the Community Visitors Scheme (CVS).

Our mission is to support older people’s right to quality care.

Our vision is a diverse, vibrant, multicultural community, where older people are respected, heard and well-informed, and can exercise their rights and responsibilities with confidence. Our values drive our work: Respect; Integrity; Collaboration; Inclusiveness; Empowerment; Responsiveness.

About the role

The new position of Advocate: Diversity and Inclusion has been created in response to the requirements of some older Australians who might find it difficult to access aged care services that are sensitive to their cultural or social backgrounds, individual circumstances, and that are appropriately tailored to meet their specific care needs.

Please see the attached position description for more information on these special needs groups.

The core purpose of the role is to provide these special needs groups with information about their rights and advocate on their behalf, as well as educating service providers about the rights of older people with diverse needs.

The Advocate: Diversity and Inclusion will develop and implement a Diversity, Inclusion and Intersectionality plan to create stronger internal mechanisms to support the delivery of ERA services to all Victorians including those from special needs groups. This includes strengthening community relationships through ERA’s new Ambassador Program, assisting with diversity and inclusion events and developing relevant resources and training programs. In addition, the Advocate: Diversity and Inclusion will share their knowledge and provide advice to ERA on barriers, enablers and practice learnings relating to diversity planning and practice.

This role is FTE 0.8 (60.8 hrs per f/n).

Please see the attached Position Description for the full list of key responsibilities.

Location

Melbourne-based, with travel required across Victoria, including to our regional offices. We are currently working from home until further notice.

About you

You have a genuine interest in and commitment to working with older people in our community, especially those with diverse needs. You have well-grounded knowledge of the diverse aged care audience: who they are, the information they need, the barriers they face, and the ways they like to receive information. You are great at creating networks with community groups, service providers and other stakeholders, and are sensitive to the needs of each. You have an understanding of how aged care information and advocacy can assist older people and their families. You are an excellent communicator and feel just as comfortable presenting a webinar as you do standing in front of a large audience. You are a strategic thinker and unafraid to try new things. You collaborate well with staff and volunteers, and can effectively lead and support a team.
