Opportunity

The Australian Government announced a $34.2million investment to expand and implement the Initial Assessment and Referral (IAR) decision support tool for mental healthcare in primary settings. This opportunity is for a Mental Health Training and Engagement Officer to join the IAR training project designed to support General Practitioners, and commissioned service providers in the primary care setting to learn about, use and embed the IAR decision support tool in their clinical practice.

  • The contract is initially until 31 December 2023 with the possibility of extension subject to ongoing funding
  • Salary from $80-90K plus superannuation and salary packaging

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver training in the IAR tool, build relationships with, and provide ongoing support to GPs and other clinicians in general practices, Aboriginal medical services, adult mental health centres, and commissioned providers, and in the future; children’s mental health centres, residential aged care facilities and local hospital networks within the CESPHN region
  • Offer training and ongoing support via multiple channels – online, telephone, videoconference and on-site to meet practitioner need
  • Participate in ‘train the trainer’ training delivered by the National Project Manager to build capability and confidence in using the IAR, facilitating training and supporting GPs to implement the IAR
  • Assist clinicians and professionals to navigate and use the IAR Guidance document, Implementation Toolkit and the Decision Support Tool (DST)
  • Contribute to development and continuous quality improvement of the suite of IAR program and training materials developed by the National Project Manager
  • Work collaboratively with internal PHN teams to support capacity building in primary care
  • Facilitate regional activities deemed important and valuable by local GPs (e.g., peer-led learning groups or communities of practice)
  • Build strong relationships with IAR TSOs across the PHN network, exploring opportunities for cross boundary learning and collaboration
  • Undertake all associated training related tasks including those outlined in the IAR TSO Training manual including dissemination of post training surveys, arranging for reimbursement for GPs and maintain appropriate records of payment, monitoring FAQs.
  • Maintaining records of engagement and training activities to support reporting requirements

Selection criteria – essential

  • Tertiary qualifications in a health-related field and current registration with a relevant professional registration body or equivalent clinical experience in mental health (primary care, tertiary or community sector);
  • Previous experience delivering professional development and/or training, one-on-one and group training, on a web-based tool or program and in person and/or Certificate IV in Training and Assessment;
  • Ability to engage with and build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders;
  • Proven high level written, verbal and electronic communication skills, good attention to detail and ability to successfully manage communications across a decentralised organisation;
  • Sound organisational skills with proven ability to work autonomously as well as a member of a high performing team;
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office based computing applications e.g. Excel, Word, SharePoint, and Outlook, and web-based presentation applications.

Selection criteria - desirable

  • Experience with working with general practice and an understanding of the workflow of general practice to assist the general practice to seamlessly embed IAR into routine practice.
  • Experience in project management, achieving deliverables in an effective and timely manner within budget guidelines
  • An understanding of the primary health care environment and experience in communicating with health care professionals and consumers
