Gas and Repower Campaigner

Environment Centre NT
  • Full time – 38 hours per week, 12 month contract
  • $74,936 to $78,883 per annum, depending on experience

The Environment Centre (NT) is looking for an experienced, creative and energetic campaigner who can build a campaign to stop any further gas development in the Northern Territory, focussing particularly on plans for an industrial gas and petrochemical precinct in pristine Darwin Harbour, as well as new, highly carbon intensive, offshore gas developments off the Northern Territory’s coast. This campaigner will also continue our work to lead and accelerate the transition for the Northern Territory to be powered locally and economically by renewable energy, building a people power movement for a clean energy economy.

The role and threat

You will take the lead on developing and delivering the Environment Centre NT’s campaign calling for no new gas developments in the Northern Territory, working closely with a diverse range of allies to stop the dangerous expansion of the fossil gas industry in the Northern Territory.  You will have all the great work from our Repower campaign to present alternative means of powering the NT economy, transitioning away from gas to renewable energy and green manufacturing.

Climate change threatens all that is special about the Northern Territory. The impacts of climate change here are already significant, and will disproportionately impact Indigenous lands and communities.  The International Energy Agency recently made it clear that if we are to avoid catastrophic global warming, there must be no new fossil fuel developments from 2021. Yet the Northern Territory and Commonwealth Governments are working to entrench a “gas-fired recovery” from the Covid pandemic that will accelerate climate collapse.  ECNT’s new campaign will build community opposition to new gas developments, and influence decision makers and industry to abandon plans to gas-fire the Northern Territory’s future and direct resources to supporting a renewable future for the Territory.
