Campaigns & Advocacy Director

  • Full time: 38 hours per week, two year position with a 3mth probationary period. The role will require preparedness to work outside of normal working hours at times
  • Salary: Range of $104,403 to $115,697 plus superannuation and five weeks leave, dependent on skills, experience and previous track record.
  • REPORTING: The position reports to the ECNT Executive Director and the positions that report to this role are the Program Manager Nature, Program Manager Fossil Fuels and Program Manager Renewables & Climate Justice.

While working constructively with the teams to deliver on the campaign objectives, the Campaign Director will ensure that the teams are well equipped, resilient and thriving., noting gaps and working with the Executive Director to resource and upskill team members.

The Campaign Director will represent ECNT in external, sector wide meetings, at events and in the media, sharing this responsibility with others as appropriate.

As well as requiring someone highly strategic, ECNT are also looking for someone who is responsive and able to turn attention to arising challenges and opportunities.

The Campaign Director will need to be committed to working with the Executive Director to establish and maintain a trusting, resilient and collaborative organisational culture

The Environment Centre NT is the peak environmental organisation in the Northern Territory (NT). We have been working to protect the NT environment since 1983.

ECNT is an exciting and dynamic organisation, with an extraordinary impact locally and nationally. We have undergone a period of growth in recent years, and we now leading some of the most important campaigns in the country.

We are the trusted, independent, voice on environmental issues in the NT and we fearlessly hold governments and industry to account in pursuit of our vision. We have expanded rapidly in the last 18 months in response to escalating environmental threats (including the climate and extinction crises). We are currently running a number of cutting-edge campaigns across our key strategic work themes: mining, climate, freshwater and biodiversity that require a sophisticated and multi-layered communications strategy.

Primary responsibilities include:

Oversight of strategy and campaign implementation

  • Assess the effectiveness of existing strategies; put in place processes to update and consolidate strategies; and outline workplans and tactics to implement them.
  • Report on progress and work closely with the Executive Director to ensure that strategies and campaign implementation meet the expectations and requirements of ECNT.
  • Develop trusting and constructive relationships with the managers and monitor the campaign teams’ capacity to effectively ,and efficiently achieve campaign goals.
  • Recognise gaps, challenges and opportunities as they arise and respond constructively.
  • Develop and maintain a holistic perspective on campaigns; support teams to prioritise and focus on strategic objectives; and be responsive to opportunities as they arise.
  • Provide a high level of campaign skills and experience and mentoring of campaign staff.
  • Assist in establishing new programs and campaigns as needed.
  • Develop and assist with program budgets and reporting requirements.
  • Undertake other duties as required by the Executive Director

Media, meetings, functions and events

  • Act as a spokesperson for ECNT in the media, strategically sharing the role to ensure a high media profile, mix of voices and campaign resilience.
  • Work with the communications and media team to develop communication requirements.
  • Engage effectively with decision-makers, members, stakeholders, sponsors and others to represent ECNT and to advance campaign objectives.
  • Represent ECNT at functions and events as required.

Workforce management

  • Develop and review position descriptions within area of management.
  • Volunteers and internship management with managers.
  • Assist with position advertising and recruitment process.
  • Probation and annual review of employee performance.
  • Leave management and planning.
  • Ensuring resources required for service delivery are consistent and standardised.

Selection criteria:

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in nature conservation, advocacy space and related areas.
  • Commitment to the conservation and environment sector.
  • Passion for protecting and conserving NT nature.
  • Understanding of political decision making.
  • Strong stakeholder and decision-maker engagement and representation skills.
  • Demonstrated intelligent and impactful leadership and campaigning skills.
  • Time management skills, in particular the ability to plan, organise and prioritise multiple projects and maintain tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated skills in leading and mentoring high performing teams.
  • Skills in media engagement and as a spokesperson.
  • High level of emotional intelligence and proven collaborative leadership style and experience.
