This is an exciting time to be in the energy industry with a major shift underway. Energy Consumers Australia is offering an opportunity for dynamic graduates of economics, engineering, human sciences or another relevant degree to join our team. Energy Consumers Australia (ECA) is a small not-for-profit, and a national voice for the needs and concerns of household and small business energy consumers. We have an accountability to energy consumers and Federal/ State Governments based on our funding sources. We advocate for change to help consumers, founded on solid evidence and working effectively with a range of partners to influence decision-makers in the energy sector.

The Role

We are looking for two graduates to join our team as policy officers. These are new roles, created to support the policy work we do on behalf of energy consumers and supporting our senior policy officers and directors. The Graduate Policy Officers will work closely with ECA policy leads to support policy projects that will deliver tangible benefits and advocate on behalf of consumers. Your day-to-day job will include:

  • Undertaking research and providing relevant analysis on strategic issues of importance to energy consumers;
  • Collaborating with key external stakeholders (including customer advocates, the research community, industry, market bodies and state and federal governments);
  • Preparing submissions and correspondence on key market issues;
  • Learning more about the energy system and how a rapidly changing energy market is impacting consumers.

The Graduate Policy Advisors will work closely with all the teams in ECA.

Key Selection Criteria

  • You should be passionate about the evolution of the energy industry and/or public policy and are intellectually curious.
  • Completed a relevant undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Economics, Engineering, Science, Human Sciences, Law or another relevant degree in the last 1-2 years.
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative analytical and research skills with an ability to assess, synthesise and review various external sources of information and you can understand and assess the relative merits of different research methodologies.
  • Advanced written and oral communications capabilities to communicate effectively and build good relationships both internally and externally. You should have good persuasive writing skills and an ability to write in plain language.
  • Driven and autonomous: You’re organised and you’ve got experience in working autonomously on a range of tasks and projects. You’re an all-rounder who takes the initiative and does whatever it takes to get the job done. You also know when to seek guidance when needed.
  • Able to meet deadlines: You have project management skills and an ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to muck in and help where needed e.g. events and stakeholder coordination.
  • Competency of the Microsoft suite of products is essential.

Key responsibilities

of the role include:

  • Analysis and background research on policy issues of importance to ECA, our stakeholders and on issues that impact energy consumers. This includes:
    • Identify issues, and structure analysis of policy problems;
    • Review complex policy issues by sourcing, analysing and evaluating quantitative and qualitative information;
    • Review and organise raw numerical data and secondary research.
  • Written communication synthesising research and policy documents, supporting research and writing opinion pieces, submissions, correspondence, and other written materials.
  • Supporting policy teams to deliver ECA’s advocacy agenda and may include varied tasks including presentations for policy makers and other stakeholders.
  • Coordination of stakeholder meetings.
  • Preparing briefs for policy team, CEO and Board.

Remuneration and Benefits

Energy Consumers Australia is a leading voice for consumers in the energy space. You will be joining an exciting and dynamic organisation that has unique access to all players in the energy markets including federal and state ministers, energy regulators as well as other organisations advocating on behalf of consumers of energy.

The role is offered on the following terms:

  • Permanent full time position (1.0 FTE);
  • Sydney location preferable - office based location in Sydney CBD (currently working remotely under COVID-19 conditions);
  • Annual salary equivalent to $60,000 to $67,000 (contingent on experience), exclusive of superannuation.
