About the role

The Recovery Support Worker will work as part of the Drummond Street Pre and Post Release Services Team supporting the implementation and delivery of our pre and post release services to women and trans and gender diverse people exiting prison. Drummond Street Services is working in partnership with Elizabeth Morgan House (EMH) to deliver these services. 

The pre and post release program delivers a range of integrated and targeted services to eligible women and trans and gender diverse people exiting prison. These services take a holistic approach and work towards improving the social and emotional wellbeing of people as a strategy to reduce recidivism and incarceration. The service will be delivered by a multi-disciplinary team of qualified and skilled practitioners, with and affirmative employment and training framework for people with lived experience of the criminal justice system including women and Aboriginal people.

Your responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a peer recovery-focused working relationship with clients to help support and maintain change through a case management process.
  • In consultation with the client, and working alongside the Therapeutic Case Worker, assist in the development of a transition plan to build social and emotional wellbeing.
  • Support the implementation of the transition plan through a range of activities such as coordination and assertive engagement.
  • Ensure ongoing collaboration and coordination with Elizabeth Morgan House practitioners and team.
  • Oversee risk and safety screening, ensure case coordination planning, linkage to and the provision of intensive case management support for higher risk cases.
  • Ensure accurate and timely data is recorded into all required client record management systems.
  • In consultation with the client identify and make appropriate referrals to other service providers.
  • Liaise with staff from Corrections Victoria at the appropriate times along the pre and post release client journey.
  • Participate in the review of cases and case management meetings with in-scope service sector organisations.
  • Liaise with internal and external services to maintain relevant links and networks to strengthen the services delivered by the pre and post release team. 

About you 

  • Highly skilled and experienced therapeutic case worker
  • Sound knowledge of public health approaches, the social determinants, and impacts of justice system involvement 
  • Understanding of and experience in working within a therapeutic trauma counselling and recovery practice framework
  • A values-based and client focused approach to service delivery informed by a demonstrated commitment to social justice issues. 

Selection Criteria

All of the following must be addressed in your application to be considered.

  • A relevant vocational qualification (for example Certificate in Community Services or Diploma) or willingness to undertake a qualification, or equivalent professional experience in a related field (required).
  • Ability to work with and support women and trans and gender diverse people in prison and presenting with multiple needs, including alcohol and other drugs, mental and/or physical illness, psychosocial, behavioural issues. 
  • Understanding the needs, issues and sensitivities of people from diverse backgrounds including Aboriginal, LGBTIQ and culturally and linguistically diverse people and communities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice.  
  • Ability to provide case planning and support response to people in prison and post-release. 
  • Lived experience of navigating service systems with and for people in prison.
  • A lived experience of and/or understanding of relevant primary and allied health services, alcohol and other drug treatment services, mental health services, employment, education and training options.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others to identify and address service and client needs.
  • Ability to effectively build, engage and maintain professional working relationships with people who have experienced incarceration.
  • Full Victorian Driver’s Licence (desirable).
  • The successful candidate will have been impacted by the justice or Community Corrections system.
