About drummond street services & the Disability Royal Commission Frontline Counselling Service

drummond street services (DS) is a not-for-profit, non-denominational agency that has over 130 years in the development and delivery of innovative services that strengthen families and communities with a strong focus on evidence-based/informed practice and across the prevention, early intervention, treatment and recovery spectrum of universal and targeted support.

On 5 April 2019, the Prime Minister, the Hon Scott Morrison MP, and Minister for Families and Social Services, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, announced the establishment of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. Learnings from the Royal Commission will help to inform Australian governments, institutions and the wider community on how to prevent, and better protect, people with disability from experiencing violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation in the future

Disability Royal Commission Frontline Counselling Service provides state wide, trauma informed counselling services to people that have been affected by the Royal Commission that are accessible, client-focused and meet the needs of people with disability, their families and carers. Delivering face-to-face, phone and online sessions to meet the diversity of clients and localities, the service will also provide supportive referrals to legal support services, advocates, financial support services, counselling and psychological care providers and refer to or collaborate with appropriate services to provide social and practical support to clients such as housing, health, mental health, financial and aged care services in order to meet the critical needs of the individual. The service offers a recovery model of support that is flexible, compassionate, respectful, empowering and holistic. 

Your role as Manager

drummond street is seeking a Manager to join their Disability Royal Commission Frontline Counselling Service on a full-time, contract basis until the end of June 2022. This role will be based in Carlton, with travel with metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria required.

Reporting to the General Manager Northern Region, this role will see you lead and collaborate with a trans-disciplinary trauma informed team to ensure delivery of high quality, client led counselling services. An extremely important position contributing to the success of the Royal Commission, you'll provide a diverse range of services relevant to each person’s situation, harnessing opportunities to facilitate and encourage an ongoing, open connection and dialogue.

About you

The following will be essential in this position:

• A Social Work, Family Therapy or Psychology qualification, along with other training and experience related to management of trauma informed counselling services for people with disability, their families and carers
• A minimum of three years Management experience in the disability sector and family services/mental health sectors, leading cross-disciplinary teams
• Demonstrated capability to develop effective collaborative partnerships with a range of stakeholders and networks that promote the service, create pathways into the service and establish protocols for referral
• Demonstrated knowledge and application of therapeutic & supportive counselling approaches for people with people with disability, their families and carers
• Demonstrated knowledge of complex trauma and recovery approaches to intervention
• Strong leadership and ability to support and develop practice staff.
• Ability to contribute to organisation including culture, people, research, best practice and sustainability including income generation
• Demonstrated ability to work with diversity, including women with disability, children with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, LGBTIQ+, refugee and people of colour Tertiary qualification in a relevant field (i.e. Psychology, Social Work, Mental Health) and further training in relation to family work
