Principal Clinician, Practice

Department of Justice & Community Safety
  • Equip people who have offended with the skills and insights to make better choices
  • Using your clinical expertise to assist the clinical workforce in developing their skills, knowledge, and practice
  • Be a part of keeping our communities safe

Our work in Forensic Intervention Services (FIS) starts with the belief that every person has the capacity to change and deserves the opportunity to make that change. By building connections with people who have offended (we call them service users) based on trust, professionalism, and empathy, we enable violent and sexual offenders to address their behaviour and develop insights that lead to better choices and a more constructive role in the community at the end of their sentence.

Led by highly respected leaders with a clear vision, we are transforming the way clinical forensic intervention is delivered in Australia and fast gaining national and international recognition.

We are in a period of exciting growth with a number of new clinical opportunities. Right now, we are looking for Principal Clinicians to build first-rate teams who want to focus on clinical practice - without responsibility for the ‘line management’ of their teams.

How we work

Our aim is to create a safe environment where we can help service users – understand their maladaptive behaviours and equip them with better decision-making abilities.

Using best practice assessment and treatment tools in both group and individual sessions, we work as a multifaceted team combining skills from a variety of disciplines including psychology, social work, occupational therapy and mental health nursing.

Reporting to the General Manager, this is a unique opportunity to build your clinical leadership skills while also having the time to manage a caseload and put your real passion into practice.

On any given day, you’ll:

  • Deliver risk assessments and therapeutic interventions with a primary focus on complex violent or sexual offenders
  • Provide expert level consultation on clinical practice issues and embed a culture of best practice across the team
  • Use your expertise and clinical acumen to drive excellence in program delivery, supporting the development of Senior Clinicians and other clinical staff
  • Work within the Risk-Needs-Responsivity model to ensure risk assessments, case formulation and treatment address the individual’s risk and needs
  • Mentor and develop clinical expertise across multi-disciplinary teams including clinicians, case workers, case managers and corrections staff
  • Support the General Manager as part of the clinical management team and collaborate with other custodial services
  • Develop strategies, proposals and presentations relating to offending behaviour and consult on high-level issues with stakeholders at State level.
  • The unique opportunity of this role actively supports Forensic Intervention Services research and evaluation agenda and to work collaboratively and alongside colleagues and peers throughout the service .

As well as building an outstanding industry profile in forensic intervention, you will play a key part in developing a world class program area within Corrections Victoria.

How we’ll support you

We provide support for your career, professional development and well-being in a variety of ways including highly valued clinical supervision and mentoring, ongoing professional development, scholarships, conferences and funding for industry registrations.

In addition to high level clinical expertise and supervision experience, we’re looking for people with an optimism for change and the belief that the people we work with deserve our help to make that change.

You’ll also need resilience as well as empathy, self-assurance, and an ability to relate to people from all walks of life no matter their past behaviour or background.

To apply, you’ll need to hold (or be eligible for) one of the following:

  • General registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia
  • Membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW)
