The Prisoner Disability Support Initiative (PDSI) is a new service that will better support prisoners with disability and complex needs whilst in prison and with their transition back into the community.

As a Disability Support Officer, you will have a chance to make your mark in establishing this new program across our regional prison facilities.

We currently have opportunities in the following locations:

  • Dhurringile Prison - .5 FTE
  • Beechworth Correctional Centre - .5 FTE
  • Fulham Correctional Centre - .5 FTE
  • Barwon Prison and/or Marngoneet and Karreenga Correctional Centres - .8FTE
  • Loddon Prison Precinct and Tarrengower Prison – 1 FTE

A day in the life of a PDSI disability support officer

Building on your experience working with people with disability and complex needs, your role will focus on the assessment of prisoners and development of positive behaviour support plans to assist with their rehabilitation, placement and management in the prison. You will:

  • Identify prisoners who may have a disability
  • Develop, implement, and monitor positive behaviour support plans.
  • Work with and consult to case managers, and other prison staff on the management, treatment, and transition planning for prisoners with disability.
  • Build prison staff’s understanding and capability in working with prisoner’s with disability and complex needs.
  • Support prisoners to access the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
  • Work with the manager and clinical team to promote the PDIS initiative and consistently improve day-to-day operations.
  • Prepare case notes, reports and collect service data.

Experience working with people with disability is required.  A qualification in social sciences or in a study area related to disability is desired but not mandatory, as well as an understanding of the forensic working environment.

Eligibility

Successful candidates will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include national police checks and misconduct screening. You will also need to possess a current Victorian driver’s licence.
