About us

The Office of the Public Advocate (OPA) is an independent statutory office accountable to the Victorian Parliament which has been established to protect the rights and enhance the position of people with disabilities in Victoria.

The policy, research and systemic advocacy efforts of the Office fall within the area of Systemic Advocacy. The Systemic Advocacy Unit aims to respond to significant issues affecting the lives of people with disability and people with mental illness. The Unit comprises the Coordinator, three other Senior Policy and Research Officers, and one Senior Legal Project Officer.

About the role

As a Senior Policy and Research Officer, you will be responsible for:

  • undertaking and initiating complex independent research and analysis on policy change topics consistent with the Office's priorities
  • consulting with OPA program areas to develop evidence-based systemic advocacy positions
  • initiating and maintaining relationships with senior internal and external stakeholders, including people with disability, community representatives, researchers, government representatives and families and carers
  • representing OPA on relevant committees and working groups.

About you

As a Senior Policy and Research Officer, you will possess:

  • specialist knowledge and understanding of policy issues relevant to people with disability
  • experience in undertaking complex research and policy analysis
  • a relevant tertiary qualification and/or experience in conducting policy research as part of a tertiary qualification.

Keys to your success will be your highly developed communication, interpersonal and policy skills including the ability to effectively establish relationships with stakeholders.
