DSS provides a range of services that are geared towards supporting Aboriginal Corporations to achieve a sustainable and independent future, focusing on building capacity by empowering local and regional decision making.

This is an exceptional opportunity to work with Traditional Owners on a highly successful and long-running land management program with strong partnerships, including with Bush Heritage Australia, to create long lasting ecological and social impact in the region.

The purpose of this role is to lead land management projects and activities in the Birriliburu Indigenous Protected Area (IPA), located within the Little Sandy and Gibson Deserts.

This includes:

  • coordinating on-country projects and activities in the Birriliburu IPA;
  • developing the capacity of the community to lead and manage the IPA program; and
  • leading the implementation of the Birriliburu IPA Healthy Country Plan and Science and Monitoring Plan.

The Birriliburu people have been actively building their capacity to lead and manage projects and have recently formed their own land management company, Birriliburu Pty Ltd (BPL). A key part of the role will be to provide mentorship and support to BPL to help them take on more and more of the running of their land management programs.

The role requires you to travel and work remotely in the field and at the Wiluna Ranger Base for extended periods of time during the field season (roughly February to November).

The successful person will:

  • be a dynamic team player;
  • have facilitation and multi-tasking skills;
  • work effectively with Aboriginal people to achieve shared goals;
  • show appropriate initiative and work productively with limited supervision;
  • have experience in working alongside traditional owner ranger groups; and
  • have excellent practical, problem solving, organisational, writing and inter-personal communication skills.

  • salary packaging of approximately $15,900 per annum plus an additional $2,650 per annum for meals and accommodation is available;
