  • TYPE OF POSITION: Full time on a 12 month contract (with a view to extension subject to funding).
  • SALARY: $77,584 - $83,479 - Salary is based on relevant skills and experience. Pay rates may differ slightly depending on the SCHADS Award pay rates in your state.
  • LOCATION: Anywhere across the country. Our current staff work remotely from Sydney, Newcastle, Adelaide and Melbourne.
  • REPORTING: This role reports to the Digital Organising Lead.
  • COMMENCEMENT: Negotiable start date commencing in January 2023.

ABOUT US

Democracy in Colour is building the power of people of colour to organise around the issues that affect us most. For migration with dignity, for great public and community services, and for diverse and accurate journalism. We are led by and for people of colour (multicultural, migrant, refugee and people seeking asylum, and non-white people).

Our current staff are based in Adelaide, Melbourne, Newcastle and Sydney.

OUR MAJOR PROJECTS

  • Launching a national Climate Justice campaign for clean energy in our communities.
  • Launching a national campaign around Migration with Dignity, so that every migrant has the certainty they need to build a life for themselves.
  • Fighting hate speech in the media through our Hate is Not News campaign.
  • Running our People of Colour Placement program where 21 jobs have been created for People of Colour trainees from across the social justice sector.
  • Launching our People of Colour mid-senior level Placement Program to change the way that decision making happens in the climate movement, and ensure that the voices of the people affected by climate change are the ones leading the fight.
  • Running a suite of anti-racism trainings throughout the year.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Rapid Response campaigner will lead Democracy in Colours rapid response work on racial justice across all our areas of work, allowing us to empower our members and make short and long term impact.

  • Identify and act on strategic opportunities for racial justice with compelling campaigns across the country.
  • Getting our campaigns and key messages into the media, including press releases and working with members to be able to tell their stories.
  • Mobilise members on key opportunities for change through creative tactics, digital channels and targeted pressure on decision makers.
  • Using rapid response campaigns to work towards our wider goals of structural change, integrating equity into everything that we do.
  • Crafting compelling online content, including email blasts, web, social media and video content.
  • Work with our databases, platforms, and channels for action to make sure that members stay engaged with our campaigns and mission.
  • Implement peer to peer action engagement including SMS.
  • Provide training to staff and volunteers in campaigning strategy and tactics when required.

  • You keep an eye on the news, politics and cultural trends so you can spot opportunities for change.
  • Sharp communication skills - you can write a great email or press release, talk to people who are invested in the campaign.
  • You understand what motivates people to take action on issues that they care about.
  • Team player - you’ve got good relational and interpersonal skills, and you can work closely with the team on campaign opportunities.
  • You can move quickly - when an opportunity for change happens, you can spring into action.
  • Not afraid to do things differently - campaigning can be a creative space for you to take bold actions, ask questions and innovate.
  • Takes feedback seriously and aims to take action on constructive feedback.
  • Understands Democracy in Colours mission, vision and core purpose.

Key Skills

  • Strong understanding of how to make change happen.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to write copy for a variety of audiences and platforms.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both in person and online.
  • Can implement digital strategy for advocacy campaigns.
  • Highly organised, and able to manage multiple projects at once without sacrificing quality.
  • Proven ability to work independently, as well as in close coordination with a remote team.
  • Effective time management - the ability to multitask, plan ahead and preempt project milestones, ensuring follow-up.
  • Systems-focused: updates, tracks and takes accountability for the areas of work you’re in charge of.
  • Knowledge of, and dedication to, racial and climate justice.

Desirable Skills

  • Understanding of power, politics and how to make change happen from the outside.
  • Experience with Action Network and/or other action tools.
  • Writing that can inspire and move people to action

THE DAY-TO-DAY

Democracy in Colour is a growing organisation that’s scaling up fast with ambitious plans to work at a pace that’s in line with the challenges we face. You’ll join a small staff team that is committed to finding, testing and pushing the envelope for people-driven change. Most of your meetings will be on Zoom or over the phone, once a week you might work with your colleagues out of our office space, and you’ll work with the team on shared online documents. You’ll be comfortable keeping yourself on track and organised in between weekly check-ins with your manager.

A month in your role could include:

  • Developing a campaign strategy and quickly turning out an effective action when the opportunity arises.
  • Organising for people of colour to speak to local media about an issue they care about.
  • Writing to a government minister to seek a response for a campaign or issue in the news.
  • Sending an email to tens of thousands of people urging them to take action for racial justice.
  • Working with organisations and community groups to collaborate on important campaigns that affect people of colour.
