The Environment Protection Division is responsible for a wide range of regulatory and non-regulatory programs to protect the environment from potentially harmful effects of products throughout their life cycle. From the product design stage to end of life, we work with industry and other stakeholders on ways to improve product sustainability, reduce chemicals of concern, increase recyclability, and reduce waste-to-landfill. Our focus is on transforming the way Australia’s waste is managed, preventing air quality and ozone layer depletion, and managing the environmental risks of industrial chemicals.
We are seeking to fill various positions to lead and progress ambitious measures to protect the environment. Teams across the division include people with diverse backgrounds, skills and experience – including policy, program and project delivery, scientific and technical analysis, legislative design, regulatory compliance and communication. Our work requires a collaborative approach and strong working relationships with agencies across the Australian Government, states and territories, industry representatives, businesses of all sizes, researchers, non-government organisations, and international fora.

Please note that this recruitment process will be used to fill both ongoing and non-ongoing positions across the division. If an offer of non-ongoing employment is made, the successful applicant would be employed for an initial period of 18 months with the possibility of extension up to a maximum period of 3 years in total. Some of these non-ongoing positions may become ongoing in the next 12 months. Should a position become ongoing then the merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of twelve months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may be used to fill the vacancy on an ongoing basis. The merit pool may also be used to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies in the division where the duties are of a similar nature.
