Davidson Search & Advisory
  • Protect the Public and Welfare of Animals
  • Monthly Board Meetings
  • 3 Year Remunerated Appointments

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board of Victoria (the Veterinary Board) is a statutory authority responsible for regulating veterinary practitioners in Victoria. The Veterinary Board's primary objective is to protect the public and the health and welfare of animals through the administration of the Veterinary Practice Act 1997. The Board consists of nine members - four registered veterinary practitioners (small animal, equine and production animal experience highly regarded); one legal practitioner; two non-veterinarians with experience in finance and business management, legal practice or the use of veterinary services; one Victorian Government representative; and a University of Melbourne employed registered veterinary practitioner.

The Board works as a team and meets monthly to consider relevant matters, including registration of veterinary practitioners, investigation of complaints made against registered veterinary practitioners, setting guidelines for professional practice and general governance, and when requested provides information as required to the Minister. Meetings may also be convened outside the normal meeting schedule to consider urgent matters. Board members must ensure that they can devote sufficient time and commitment to properly perform their role and duties on behalf of the Veterinary Board.

The Veterinary Board will be appointed for a three-year period, commencing in June 2022. The following categories of applicants are sought:

  • Four registered veterinary practitioners
  • One legal practitioner
  • Two non-veterinarians with experience in finance and business management, legal practice or the use of veterinary services

To be considered for the registered veterinary practitioner appointments, Non- Executive Directors will require at least five years' post-registration experience. The Veterinary Board receives complaints across all types of veterinary practice, with more complaints against small animal practitioners than others, so recent small animal experience would be valuable. There is also a need for the membership of the Veterinary Board to include veterinary members with experience in other areas (e.g. production animal and equine practice).

We are seeking Legal practitioners with experience in administrative law and should have at least five years of post-admission experience.

Non-veterinary applicants (i.e. community members) should have experience in finance and business management, accounting, legal practice or the use of veterinary services.

For all positions, proven experience on tribunals, Board governance and appropriate qualifications such as GAICD would be advantageous.

The Victorian Government is committed to ensuring that government boards and committees reflect the rich diversity of the Victorian community, and equal representation of women on government boards. Women now make up more than 50 per cent of new appointments to paid boards.
