About Us

The Drug and Alcohol Multicultural Education Centre (DAMEC) is a non-government organisation whose primary purpose is to reduce the harm associated with the use of alcohol and other drugs (AOD) within culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities in New South Wales (NSW).

DAMEC's main activities are:

  • Research into AOD use within CALD communities in NSW
  • Projects with AOD treatment services to improve their cultural competence and their accessibility to CALD communities
  • Community education and community capacity-building projects with CALD communities to prevent alcohol and other drug-related harm
  • Development and dissemination of multilingual AOD resources
  • Development and delivery of culturally appropriate AOD treatment services

About the role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Project Officer to join our DAMEC Research and Projects team. The Project Officer will be responsible for undertaking a range of different projects to improve the cultural sensitivity of specialist alcohol and other drugs (AOD) interventions for people from CALD backgrounds. A key aspect of this role is to build the capacity of CALD communities to understand and address AOD issues and deliver cultural competence training to mainstream AOD services. The role will play a central role in enhancing the quality and visibility of DAMEC projects.

Essential criteria

  • A tertiary qualification in health, welfare, social science, or related discipline
  • Knowledge and understanding of AOD and/or CALD multicultural health issues (previous experience in these sectors would be highly desirable)
  • Knowledge and understanding of AOD harm minimisation principles
  • Demonstrated ability to design and deliver training and professional development activities
  • Knowledge and understanding of contemporary approaches to cultural competence and community engagement
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and collaborate with DAMEC’s stakeholders
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Excellent written communication skills, with demonstrated experience in producing high quality reports and/or grant applications for funding
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and to work independently and unsupervised
  • Current drivers license
  • Computer literacy and word processing skills

Remuneration

Dependent upon on qualifications and experience equivalent to Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award. Applicants offered a position are required to provide a Police Record Check.
