Karajarri people are the traditional owners of the land and waters along the southwest Kimberley coast. Karajarri country is the source of spirit, culture and language for our people. The Karajarri Traditional Lands Association (KTLA) is the Registered Native Title Body Corporate representing the Karajarri people. Through the Karajarri Ranger and Indigenous Protected Area programs we manage more than 32,000 square kilometres of jurarr (coastal areas) and pirra (inland areas). The Port Smith Bird Park Project Officer is accountable for:

  1. Coordination / delivery of the 5-priorities in the Karajarri Tourism Strategy 2016-2021
  2. Supporting the Land & Sea Manager to develop indigenous staff employed to undertake activities at the Bird Park, maintain assets, manage the fire plan and implement the visitor’s permit system.
  3. Meeting all requirements of the lease agreement with the ILC for management of the Port Smith property, including adherence to the agreed Work Plan (corporate governance, property costs, statutory and regulatory compliance, reporting against agreed deliverables.
  4. Development and implementation of the property plan for the Port Smith property, including approvals and regulatory requirements.
  5. Managing partnerships and attracting additional investment.
  6. Assisting in the coordination of, and participate in, relevant training as identified by manager.

SELECTION CRITERIA - ESSENTIAL

  1. Tertiary qualifications in business, tourism and/or related disciplines.
  2. Significant project management experience including the ability to manage risk, schedule activities, manage budgets, develop reports, compile data, and conduct reviews in compliance with the funding agreement, the corporation’s policies and procedures, and relevant legislation.
  3. Persuasive leader who will engage and support the corporation to deliver on its tourism strategic plan
  4. Effective and proactive communication and interpersonal skills enabling you to establish and maintain partnerships with a broad range of stakeholders from Traditional Owners to government organisations, building contractors, consultants etc.
  5. Demonstrated experience managing lease agreements and property statutory and regulatory compliance.
  6. Experience developing and implementing property plans including the coordination of approvals and regulatory requirements i.e., development applications, obtaining quotes etc.
  7. Experience managing funding grants and securing investment from other sources.
  8. Experience in the development of tourism products in conjunction with relevant stakeholders.

SELECTION CRITERIA - DESIRABLE

  1. Infrastructure project management experience.
  2. Ability to work with and support the development of indigenous staff.
  3. Previous experience living and working in a remote area with Aboriginal communities, coordinating on-the-ground projects.
  4. Understanding of native title, land tenure and community governance?

ESSENTIAL LICENCES / CLEARANCES

Initial and ongoing employment is subject to:

  1. A medical to determine the requisite minimum standard of fitness.
  2. National Police Clearance – or the ability to obtain within one month of being offered the position.
  3. Working with Children Check – or the ability to obtain within one month of being offered the position.
  4. Current driver’s licence and ability to operate a 4WD vehicle.

BENEFITS

  • Base salary of $65-$75k per annum – dependent on experience
  • 9.5% superannuation on OTE
  • 4-weeks annual leave
  • 1-week remote leave
  • Annual leave travel time (subject to conditions)
  • Annual leave loading of 17.5% paid on 4-weeks
  • District Allowance (Single $3,199 or Family $6,398k)
  • Annual Travel Allowance of $1200 after every 12-month continuous service
  • As KTLA is a Not-for-Profit organisation, salary packaging is available.
  • If recruited beyond the Kimberley Region: Relocation and removal allowances for travel and personal effects and a rental allowance of up to $250 per week may apply
