About the National Drug Research Institute (NDRI):

The NDRI mission is to conduct and disseminate high quality research that supports evidence informed policy, strategies and practice to prevent and minimise alcohol and other drug-related health, social and economic harms among individuals, families and communities in Australia. NDRI research has informed and contributed significantly to policy and evidence-based practice in Australia and internationally. NDRI has six research priorities which include:

  1. Alcohol and other drug policy and strategies;
  2. Needs of Aboriginal Australians;
  3. Innovation in prevention and early intervention;
  4. Social contexts of alcohol and other drug use;
  5. Reducing harm among people who use alcohol and other drugs;
  6. Innovation in the management of alcohol and other drug problems.

In this role you will:

A unique and exciting opportunity has arisen for the right person to join NDRI Melbourne. Consistent with the overall NDRI mission you will develop and lead a program of research of national and international standing which will primarily focus on reducing harm among people who use alcohol and other drugs. Working closely with the Head of the Melbourne Office, you will develop a growth strategy that leverages partnerships with key local, national and international organisations to develop a strong funding base from which to attract new staff and students to foster a collegial academic culture making the NDRI Melbourne Office a vibrant and dynamic environment.

We are looking for someone with:

  • A PhD, in epidemiology, public health or a related discipline;
  • A strong track record of success in nationally competitive research grants and/or fellowships;
  • Ability to display high levels of performance and academic achievement in alcohol and other drug health and/or social research;
  • Have demonstrated capacity to assist the team to work with community and government stakeholders to identify and action a coherent program of quality research aligned to community needs, and the University’s and NDRI’s research strategies;
  • Demonstrate the capacity to undertake your own program of research consistent with the Strategic Plan current for NDRI and Curtin University, including being a chief investigator in applications for nationally competitive research grants and/or fellowships;
  • Demonstrate a history of publishing high quality international standard research outputs, consistent with that expected of a Curtin senior academic
  • Disseminate research findings through research teaching, seminars, lectures, workshops and conferences; and,
  • Demonstrate a capacity and commitment to attracting and supervising doctoral, masters and honours students, and provide academic mentoring and support to early- and mid-career researchers.
