A number of newly created roles are available to support delivery of the ACS portfolio of projects and will be based within CSIRO Land & Water (L&W). Through an integrated systems research approach CSIRO L&W provides the information and technologies required by government, industry and the Australian and international communities to protect, restore, and manage natural and built environments.

We are seeking a Remote Sensing Specialist to join this dynamic scientific team to support delivery of the national bushfire intelligence platform. The National Bushfire Intelligence Capability seeks to develop a national platform for best practice activities and contemporary research, delivering an information system and associated planning and decision support tools for decision makers managing bushfire risk.

As the Remote Sensing Specialist, you will work with Project leads to support the delivery of a national platform for the production and provisioning of priority national bushfire information products. You will be responsible for remotely sensed data processing, integration of a range of spatial data, programming and modelling capabilities. You will be involved in the design and implementation of processing methods, algorithms and workflows that help inform bushfire fuel state, fire behaviour and hazards. This role may also work with and support other projects across CSIRO L&W’s portfolio.

Your duties will include:

  • Development of data processing methods and workflows for remotely sensed data from satellite, airborne and terrestrial sensors, including their integration with large spatial and temporal environmental datasets.
  • An ability to use and customise common spatial modelling tools such as ArcGIS or QGIS. 
  • Implementing statistical, physical and process models that report on environmental processes.
  • Developing data processing workflows using programming skills in a high level language such as R or Python.
  • Ensuring data integrity and quality, including maintaining and managing metadata
  • Collaborative software development using version control systems such as Azure DevOps, BitBucket and GitHub.

  • Salary: $102k - $111k pa (pro-rata for part time), plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD (or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience) in a quantitative discipline such as science, engineering, IT or a related field
  • Experience in the use of a range of remote sensing data and their application in multi-disciplinary projects that support decision making for environmental management, investment, and policy.
  • Proficiency in computer programming or scripting languages for automating workflows and the processing of large data sets.
  • Demonstrated experience with a range of computing platforms (e.g., high-performance and cloud computing) and programming languages (e.g., Python, R).
  • Experience in the implementation and use of modelling approaches that report on environmental processes.
  • Sound written and oral communication skills, including the production of scientific reports.

Eligibility

To be eligible to work in CSIRO you must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or either hold, or be able to obtain, a valid working visa (sponsorship may be provided to eligible candidates).
