Non-Executive Director (Voluntary)

North Sydney Community Service Ltd t/a Crows Nest Centre

About the Role

The Crows Nest Centre Board is looking for people with commitment to our vision of ensuring ‘a connected community’ and who are ready to contribute to the growth and development of the Centre. Ideally, they live in or near to the area of Sydney served by the Crows Nest Centre and have practical knowledge and experience of the area’s changing demography and the service needs of the community. The preferred people will be those who can demonstrate skills in the areas of finance; organisational governance; and marketing and community awareness raising. They will be ready to make an active contribution to the board, think laterally and strategically, and contribute effectively to decision making. Previous experience as a non-executive director of other community based and/or not for profit organisations; participating as a volunteer; and familiarity with local multicultural communities would be advantageous. In its deliberations, the board draws on directors’ skills in the areas of community services delivery, multicultural inclusion, HR, governance, risk management, finance, quality systems, volunteering, government relations and organisational development.

About the Organisation

North Sydney Community Service Ltd, trading as Crows Nest Centre, is a not-for-profit company and registered charity. We provide a range of in-home and centre-based services to older people, people with a disability, migrants, parents, and people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Detailed information on the services currently provided is available at www.crowsnestcentre.org.au.

The Centre is supported by Commonwealth, State and Local Governments as well as local schools, churches, businesses, service clubs, individuals, and other agencies. It operates under a Joint Plan of Management with North Sydney Council and operates from a Council owned community centre, in the heart of the Crows Nest shopping area.

Crows Nest Centre operates in a dynamic environment. Commonwealth aged care reform requires continuing adaptation of successfully established services. In addition, the nature of the community we serve is changing with projections from the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicating that the population in Crows Nest and St Leonards will grow by more than 50%, over the next 20 years.

Day to day management of the Centre is the responsibility of the Executive Officer who reports directly to the Board. The Board provides strategic advice and ensures the Centre operates in accordance with CNC’s strategic plan and approved budget.

The Board meets seven times a year on the last Tuesday of the month between February and November. The Board’s Finance and Risk Committee and Services Committee provide advice.
