The organisation

SAMSSA is a program of the Canberra Rape Crisis Centre. The program is funded by the ACT Government through the Department of Disability Housing & Community Services under the Community Services Program.

The Canberra Rape Crisis Centre (CRCC) is a non-government, feminist organisation working to eliminate sexual violence against women, young people, children and men. Our Mission is to be an active, visible catalyst for social change through the provision of high-quality services within a feminist framework.

We provide confidential counselling and support for women, men, children and young people and their families who have experienced any form of sexual assault and/or sexual harassment recently or in the past and practical support for women who have been raped or have experienced childhood sexual abuse or organised sadistic abuse, recently or many years ago.

The Service Assisting Male Survivors of Sexual Assault (SAMSSA) offers counselling and support to men over the age of 16 in the ACT and surrounding region, and their supporters, to recover from the effects and impacts of sexual assault or childhood sexual abuse.

The position

The Outreach Counsellor/Educator will:

  • Provide counselling, information, referral, advocacy and support services to men, and where necessary also provide counselling to women, who have experienced sexual assault, or their supporters. Counselling and support will be provided at CRCC and Everyman centres.
  • Deliver presentations/information sessions in relation to Responding to Disclosures as well as offer support and/or assistance to victims of recent, historical and childhood institutional abuse. The position is a combination of working within CRCC centre and within Everyman.
  • Deliver sexual violence and other education programs to a range of community-based groups and organisations.
  • Engage and build working relationships with referral agencies and key stakeholders.

Key selection criteria

Mandatory Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of gender relations and their impact on men’s and young men's experience of, and how they make sense of, sexual assault.
  • High-level knowledge and understanding of the causes and consequences of sexual violence, within a feminist framework.
  • Previous experience in providing counselling, information, referral, advocacy, group work and support services to people who have experienced interpersonal violence.
  • Ability or experience in presenting and delivering training to professional organisations and clients.
  • Ability or experience in forming relationships and partnerships with other professional organisations and in working with other organisations toward joint goals.
  • Proven ability to work independently within a team environment, identify priorities, meet deadlines and manage the workload.
  • Demonstrated ability to work positively in a team to promote and model collaborative and respectful staff and client relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High level of computer literacy including use of Word, email and information databases.
  • Police check clearance and ability to obtain a ‘Working with Vulnerable People’ card.
  • A current driver’s license is required.

Desirable Requirements

  • Previous experience working in an advocacy or service delivery organisation.
  • Current knowledge and experience of the ACT community services in the ACT.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications in social work, psychology or counselling or significant relevant experience.
