CPSU has secured funding through the WorkSafe WorkWell Mental Health Improvement Fund for a period of three years to develop a Vicarious Trauma Prevention and Awareness Toolkit.

Pilots will be developed in partnership with Government departments, DJCS and DHSS. The kit will include tools and resources customised specifically to each area in consultation with employees and will provide training, knowledge and skills necessary for Government departments to address the trauma needs of their staff. It will help build capacity in departments to proactively addresses trauma impact through policies, procedures, practices, and programs and prioritise organisational change and identify needs to mitigate risk and prevent trauma related mental health injury and illness and support a proactive approach to workers who are exposed to vicarious trauma.

Organisational Environment

CPSU is a product of the amalgamation of the State Public Services Federation the largest union covering State Government employees in Australia, and the Public Sector Union, the former union covering Commonwealth Government employees. The Unions’ goal is to create, protect and improve conditions of public servants across Australia. This job is based in Melbourne with the Victorian Branch of the CPSU who represent State Public Servants and a range of other Public Sector employees within Victoria.

The Role

The position will join a small Project Team within the Union which reports through a Project Manager to the Branch Secretary.

The Project Officer will be responsible for the co-ordination of the Vicarious Trauma Prevention and Awareness Toolkit (VTT) project within a number of project pilot groups with oversight from a steering committee.

The Project Officer will utilise mental health and wellbeing skills related to trauma knowledge and industry awareness in the development and modification of the VTT project objectives and milestones.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide CPSU and the Project leader with advice with respect to project
  2. Prepare for and represent CPSU at steering committee meetings and WorkSafe project oversight meetings.
  3. Analyse confidential data pertaining to trauma exposure to identify target areas within the pilot program. 
  4. Prepare reports and recommendations by interpreting and analysing the data
  5. Coordinate working parties within the target areas, analyse findings and apply results to the project
  6. Prepare project correspondence to relevant stakeholders on behalf of CPSU Victorian Branch
  7. Development of project scope for IT based on communications and IT development plans.
  8. Prepare quarterly reports for WorkSafe – measure against milestones.
  9. Work collaboratively with project partners in the delivery of the project outcomes 
  10. Coordinate focus and working groups within the pilot areas across the State. Will involve travel
  11. Other duties as directed including, but not limited to, internal administrative tasks such as minute taking, recording activities for monthly reports to Victorian Branch Council.

The selection criteria for the position are:

  • Project management skills and a demonstrated ability to deliver project objectives and outcomes.
  • Demonstrated analytic and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results as per the key responsibilities of this position description and Evidence that the skills required by the position are held by the applicant
  • A high degree of written skills
  • A demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
  • Desirable: Graduate or post-graduate qualifications and/or experience in Mental health and wellbeing especially related to trauma.
