ABOUT THE ROLE

Wilderness Australia are currently seeking a volunteer Media Officer to work in our Sydney office for two days per week. This position is ideal for a current media and communications student or a recent graduate with a passion for environmental conservation looking to gain work experience.

As our volunteer Media Officer, you will be a valuable member of our small team, working closely with the Communications Manager and General Manager to make sure we can source, locate and share informative content and stunning images with thousands of our dedicated supporters.

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

Wilderness Australia is Australia’s longest-running wilderness conservation organisation. We have worked for over fifty years to protect Australia's wild rivers, native forests and precious wildlife.

Together with businesses, other non-profits, Governments and passionate supporters like you, we’ve delivered some exceptional outcomes for Australia’s wild places:

  • We sought wilderness management for South-West Tasmania, Kakadu, Hinchinbrook Island, Daintree and national parks in Victoria.
  • We successfully campaigned for the reservation of Lithgow’s Gardens of Stone, the Border Ranges National Park and Kakadu National Park.
  • We played a leading role in realising Myles Dunphy's plan for a Greater Blue Mountains National Park, as well as spearheaded the successful campaign for its World Heritage listing.
  • Our proposal for a Wilderness Act was accepted by the NSW Government in 1987. Through this legislation, we’ve helped protect more than 2 million hectares of Wilderness in NSW.

YOU WILL WORK ON:

  • Scanning documents to create digital assets.
  • Uploading photographic and digital media resources to internal platforms – online databases, our organisation’s website.
  • Cataloguing images in our database to make them easy to find.
  • Posting content to our social media platforms and helping to devise content strategy.
  • We would also expose the successful applicant to working within a high-impact and fast paced campaigning environment, including working with media, political offices and our consultants.

DESIRED INTEReSTS AND SKILLS:

  • Basic understanding of google drive.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms like Facebook and Youtube.
  • Good communications skills.
  • Ability to show initiative and work independently.
  • Interest in environmental conservation, our nation’s precious wildlife and familiarity with national parks, wilderness areas and World Heritage areas.
