Youth Mental Health Worker - Central Coast

Coast Shelter

Part Time - 4 days per week

Life at Coast Shelter

Coast Shelter is a leading Central Coast not for profit charity assisting families, adults and young people with complex issues arising from their experience of homelessness, abuse and neglect. Our organisation is driven by our mission to deliver innovative solutions to address homelessness, violence and poverty, to achieve immediate and lasting changes.

At Coast Shelter, you'll be joining a team of committed staff and volunteers who work to end Homelessness and Domestic and Family Violence. Our people are innovative professionals, who are driven to help make positive change in the community that we live. We are bold with ideas and operate with pace and passion.

The Role

We are seeking a passionate, highly motivated Youth Mental Health Worker to join our Youth Services team which will operate across our 5 youth shelters on the NSW Central Coast. Our youth specialist homelessness services provide supported accommodation for young women and men between the ages of 15 and 24. This includes support and accommodation as well as targeted services aimed at intervening early to prevent young people from entering homelessness.

It is widely known that mental health problems are not always easily recognisable, and can remain undiagnosed and therefore untreated. The stigma attached to mental illness and discrimination faced by young people with mental illness often from low socio-economic backgrounds can act as a significant deterrent to accepting there is a problem and seeking treatment.

This newly created role has been designed to assist and improve the mental health and wellbeing of our young people who may have diagnosed and undiagnosed mental health conditions, in particular those whose access to psychological support may be limited by homelessness, financial hardship or other barriers. The position works in an integrated and collaborative manner with existing on site case work support staff.

All about You

You hold a relevant tertiary qualification such as psychology and are driven to make a difference in the lives of young people whose access to psychological support may be limited by financial hardship or other barriers.

The successful applicant will have a minimum 3 years’ experience providing psychological therapies and services to young people under 25 years of age and be able to address the essential criteria below:

  • Advanced understanding of child protection issues and client vulnerabilities such as drug and alcohol use, domestic violence, mental health issues, and the impact of trauma and the effect on child behaviour and development
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in working with young people experiencing mental health issues and other issues impacting their lives such as homelessness, unemployment, domestic and family violence.
  • Demonstrated skills in assessment, case planning, delivery of therapies or workshops and capacity to provide culturally appropriate responses to young people
  • Demonstrated high level communication skills including written skills and the ability to prepare and contribute to reports
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to evidence based services and therapies in line with a person’s needs as well as a strong understanding of the principles of strengths based, client-centred, trauma informed framework.
