CNLC works with the community of the Carlton Housing Estate, consisting of over 3500 residents, who come from diverse cultural backgrounds including Horn of African, Vietnamese and Chinese residents and many who have complex needs. As part of CNLC’s community development program we manage the Open Door hub at 480 Lygon St Carlton in addition to also being based at our centre at 20 Princes St Carlton North. The purpose of Open Door Hub is to promote and support our diverse communities to succeed. CNLC’s Make it Work (MIW) program is housed at CNLC’s Open Door hub and assists migrants and refugees in the local area to secure employment, work experience or get assistance in to further education. MiW is complimented by our support service at Open Door to assist our clients to also address their complex needs as well as participate in our community programs. 

This is an interesting role offering stewardship of diverse projects and meaningful outcomes. The Community Development Project Coordinator will work with the Open Door hub team to implement our programs and deliver community development projects. You will work to achieve outcomes for the Carlton community and deliver our evaluation process to understand how we can improve our programs. You will work directly with local businesses and agencies to develop partnerships and ultimately to secure employment positions for our clients. You will also engage with the local community to organise activities delivered through Open Door such as yoga classes and programs to respond to the community’s needs in the covid-19 era. You will be delivering on grant project deliverables with a complimentary budget. 

As the Projects Coordinator you would be expected to help organise and deliver these services in conjunction with the Community Development Coordinator, Community Development Officer, Community Development Worker, Open Door Activities Officer and volunteers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  1. Work to expand Open Door’s reach into diverse communities and engage a broad range of cultures in our activities;
  2. Coordinate the Business engagement partnerships work within the Make it Work program;
  3. Promote MiW’s employment program to local businesses and agencies and identify local businesses that would suit partnering with the MIW program including large and small businesses and agencies;
  4. Liaise with the Community Development Officer and help to match unemployed clients with employment opportunities;
  5. Collaborate with the Activities Officer to organise forums and programs for the Carlton community;
  6. Organise networking and other public events;
  7. Assist with project budget planning, implementation and administration;
  8. Implement Open Door’s evaluation activities associated to projects;
  9. Participate in team duties such as attending meetings, administration duties and keeping accurate & up to date records.

KEY SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Important Skills

  • Experience working with individuals and communities from diverse cultural backgrounds. Have you worked with community organisations before? Please give examples of where you have worked with the community in the past;
  • Ability to undertake complex projects including planning, coordination, implementation and administration;
  • Ability to network and engage a broad range of stakeholders including engaging businesses in progressive community employment initiatives;
  • Have experience in financial management and reporting;
  • Understanding of evaluation processes;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Demonstrated skills in establishing priorities and monitoring work flow in areas of responsibility;
  • Good computer skills including internet searching, word-processing, excel spread sheets, e-mail, and both lap top and tablet use;
  • Be organised, self-motivated and being in good time
  • Be able to problem solve and follow up needs of clients

Helpful Skills

  • A Diploma or Degree in Community Development, Business Management or Business Administration or other relevant tertiary qualification in the social, community or behavioural sciences
  • Language or languages other than English
  • Understanding of local networks or willing to make relationships with other agencies and services
  • Current First Aid certificate
  • Police check
  • Working with children check
