About the CMT

Former Child Migrants were sent to Australia through government schemes as unaccompanied children without their parents or families, and placed into brutal, cold institutions across the country.  Deceived that they were orphans with no living relatives, many lived for decades without family until the scandal of child migration was exposed by CMT. Many suffered severe institutional abuse in the care of churches and charities, which has adversely impacted their adult lives and relationships.

About the role

Are social work values at the heart of your practice? The Child Migrants Trust, an international project, needs a Social Worker at its Melbourne office to promote human rights and social justice.

The role includes restoration of family and identity and counselling in relation to historical, childhood institutional abuse.

Can you contribute to a specialist service involved in reunions, redress and recovery? If you want to make a real difference, this role could be for you.

This twelve month contract will suit a newly qualified graduate or those keen to gain experience in a specialist agency, with a strong emphasis on training.

You must have a social work qualification and the right to live and work in Australia to be considered for this position.

Skills and experience preferred

  1. Basic knowledge of the child migration schemes and national apologies to former child migrants in the UK and Australia.
  2. Understanding of trauma informed practice, with experience in child protection or mental health services.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of grief, loss and end of life issues for older people.
  4. Knowledge of reparation and social justice principles.
  5. Solid writing skills for preparation of evidence-based statements for historic abuse Inquiries.
  6. Current driver’s licence.

An understanding of family life in the United Kingdom and Ireland during the post-World War 2 years is essential for this culturally sensitive work.
