Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) was Australia’s first dedicated paediatric research facility and is now one of the world’s most highly regarded independent medical research centres. Our research focuses on the areas of embryonic development and birth defects, cancer, neuroscience and gene therapy and we have a strong international reputation based on our research outcomes. It is also home to the world-first proteomics project, ProCan, which is changing the way cancer is diagnosed and treated. CMRI’s research programs are supported by state of the art facilities and committed research and support staff. The IP and Commercialisation lawyer will: 

  • be responsible for the coordination, negotiation, preparation and execution of research and commercialisation contracts - typical workload will include material transfer agreements, research collaboration agreements and sponsored research agreements
  • provide specialist legal advice, documentation and transaction support on spin-outs/start-ups, the establishment of joint ventures and technology transfer transactions including liaising with expert external advisors as required;  
  • work closely with CMRI’s Commercialisation Office and researchers to support the Institute’s technology transfer objectives and report to Head of Legal; 
  • identify and manage key commercial and project risks; 
  • assist with the implementation of contracts management software/platform;  
  • be responsible for the maintenance of contractual records. 

Ideally you will be an Australian qualified legal professional with a strong interest in commercialisation and at least 5 years of post-qualification experience. Experience and/or specialist qualifications in intellectual property and/or life sciences will be highly regarded.   

Alternatively, you may be an experienced contracts manager who has performed a similar role at an academic institute, preferably within the life sciences.

You will be provided with a competitive remuneration package in accordance with qualifications and experience. The role will initially be for a 12-month term with a view to an ongoing appointment.
