The role

We’re looking for a campaigner to join the Climate Council’s campaigns team who can hit the ground running. You’ll be responsible for driving the Climate Council’s clean jobs campaign, ensuring the state government implements strong clean jobs policies and programs, as well as supporting our other campaigns which span climate impacts and solutions. In this role you’ll work with the Climate Council team and our campaign partners to execute tactics like community engagement, media, research, policy analysis and political advocacy. You’ll be working alongside some of the best communicators, researchers, strategists and scientists to execute these campaigns.
This role reports to the Campaigns Director.

Key responsibilities

The key responsibilities of the Campaigner role include:

  • Stakeholder engagement. You’ll be supporting and maintaining the Climate Council’s growing relationships with Ministers, staffers and Government stakeholders. You’ll also be assisting with building and maintaining high-level networks and relationships with relevant stakeholders, from affected communities to front-line workers, academics, journalists and members of the business community, as well as assisting in working collaboratively with diverse sector partners to execute coordinated campaigns.
  • Assist with policy research and development. You’ll need to keep abreast of policy developments to ensure consistent pressure is applied. You’ll also be assisting with policy research and support key campaign initiatives to drive this forward
  • Events coordination. You’ll be coordinating virtual and physical events when they are relevant to campaign outcomes in partnership with the operations and community teams.
  • Writing content. You’ll be writing high quality campaign content; from event agendas and emails to political briefers and talking points
  • Stakeholder work.Staying across the media cycle. In partnership with the Climate Council’s communications team and Climate Media Centre you’ll stay across the media cycle and be alert to policy developments, you’ll think through how to pivot campaigns in response to unfolding events.
  • Contribute positively to building the Climate Council culture and mission.

About you

The successful candidate will have:

Campaign, policy and/or communications experience.

  • You’ve got campaigning experience and a strong understanding of campaign strategy including online/offline tactics. You’ll be used to coming up with creative angles and tactics to progress campaign outcomes. Political advocacy experience at the state or federal level will be considered favourably.
  • You’re an exceptional written communicator adept at thinking through complex policy ideas and communicating them simply and clearly.

Strong stakeholder and project management skills.

  • You’ve got experience dealing with a range of high-level stakeholders, particularly politicians and their advisers.
  • You’ve got excellent project management skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • You have demonstrated ability to work across the political divide, engaging with a diverse range of political leaders and stakeholders.

Exemplify personal drive and integrity

  • Autonomous. You’re organised and you’ve got experience in working autonomously on a range of tasks and projects. You’re an all-rounder who takes the initiative and does whatever it takes to get the job done.
  • Rapid responder. You’ve got the ability to make quick decisions in complex situations and pivot campaigns to respond to unfolding circumstances.
  • Team player. You’re experienced in working across teams and across sectors to build collaborative campaigns.
  • You’re passionate about tackling climate change. You care about driving down Australia’s greenhouse gas pollution and ramping up renewables. You’ve got experience working in climate change or the social justice sector.

With exposure to some of the leading minds tackling climate change, this role is a unique opportunity.

  • Annual salary of $75k- $80k + super (contingent on experience)
  • Full time, one year contract
  • Melbourne preferred but will consider Sydney based candidates
  • Split of working from home/working from our offices in either Melbourne CBD or Sydney Surry Hills.
