As one of Australia’s largest and most experienced carbon farming project developers, Climate Friendly helps land owners and land managers to unlock economic, social and environmental value through improved management of Australia’s land. This includes more than 120 partnerships with farmers, plantation managers, agribusiness and Indigenous groups on carbon farming projects.

Primary purpose of this position:

Assist to deliver legal and governance services including:

  • Managing project registrations, variations and consents.
  • Preparing service contracts for new projects.
  • Conducting legal due diligence on new carbon farming projects.
  • Assisting to maintain governance and compliance systems.

Position would suit recent graduate (with legal training desirable).

About the Legal and Governance Team

The team is responsible for maintaining and improving the legal, governance and compliance requirements across Climate Friendly’s business, including:

  • Managing the contracting, registration, consent and variation processes for all new and current carbon farming projects.
  • Maintaining critical project information and process flows on a customer relationship management system.
  • Developing and maintaining governance systems for company operations, project compliance, contract management and risk.
  • Maintaining a legal template suite appropriate to managing carbon farming projects and developing new contracts to support new business models.
  • Providing internal legal advice on miscellaneous matters.
  • Managing external legal providers and developing a database of external legal advice.
  • Managing relationships with native title groups, including development of memoranda of understanding and landholder agreements where project consent is required.
  • Implementing a Reconciliation Action Plan.
  • Managing compliance with Climate Friendly Financial Services’ Australian Financial Services Licence.
  • Managing compliance with the Australian Carbon Industry Code of Conduct.

Key outcomes / accountabilities:

Include but are not limited to:

  • Preparing and managing submission of project registration packages, including client information forms, project registration paperwork and carbon credit account forms.
  • Preparing service and sales contracts, and assisting in contract management.
  • Preparing eligible interest holder consent packages and managing day to day liaison with interest holders to obtain consents.
  • Preparing and managing submission of project variation requests.
  • Conducting legal due diligence on new carbon farming projects.
  • Assisting maintaining and updating governance and compliance systems.
  • Assisting with research on miscellaneous legal and compliance issues.
  • Assisting to maintain project information via data management on customer relationship management system.
  • Day to day management of the correspondence inbox.

Selection Criteria

Knowledge Skills & Experience:

Include but are not limited to:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification essential (with legal training desirable).
  • Experience or interest in environmental science / management desirable.
  • Ability to solve problems, prioritise workload and provide advice to manager.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a remotely based team and to work independently with minimal supervision.
