The Clean State climate initiative is searching for a talented director and advocate with a track record of success in strategic communications and movement building to lead its drive for transformative action on climate change in Western Australia. 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Clean State Director position requires a driven, strategic, and dynamic leader, ready to take this highly successful climate change initiative to the next level. Their central mission will be to lead the organisation to drive broad-based mainstream support for government and business action on climate change in one of the world’s most energy intensive economies.

KEY DETAILS:

• Hours: Full time including requirement to work outside of normal work hours at times
• Salary guide: $130,000 p/a depending on skills and experience
• Contract period: The term of this role is three years, subject to successful performance reviews, with a view to continue beyond that period subject to funding.
• Location: The position is based in Perth, Western Australia. We would be pleased to aid the right candidate with relocation if necessary.
• Reporting: This position reports directly to an independent advisory board.

DUTIES:

• Develop and lead a high impact program of strategic communications, stakeholder relationships, community engagement and government relations that delivers broad-based, mainstream support for action on climate change in Western Australia.
• Lead the development of campaign and communications strategy which successfully influences public policy in securing swift and substantial climate action.
• Grow and manage a high impact, committed, and results driven team of staff and volunteers.
• Be an effective and trusted public spokesperson for the Clean State initiative, and to demonstrate commitment to its strategy and aims in all internal and public activities and communications.
• To initiate, lead, and manage delivery of strategies and tactics including strategic communications, stakeholder relationships, lobbying and political engagement, community organising, research and policy development.
• Develop relationships and undertake high-level lobbying and engagement with ministers and other decision makers.
• Lead a program of activities that build further capacity for the initiative, including cultivating relationships with existing and new funding partners, initiating retail fundraising efforts, grant applications, sponsorships, in-kind partnerships and other strategies.
• Provide reports to an Independent Advisory Board, Executive and funding partners on progress.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Essential criteria

• Demonstrated track record of success in leading strategic communications and advocacy campaigns including success at leading campaign strategy and delivery.
• Personal drive to make change and achieve results, with demonstrated innovation and flexibility, ability to work under pressure, and manage complex stakeholder interests.
• Demonstrated success in developing strategic partnerships and relationships with the business community, and other stakeholder groups that are traditionally seen as a barriers to action on climate change.
• Proven ability to influence stakeholders from community, business and government at a senior level.
• Demonstrated experience at recruiting and managing high performing teams, and reporting at the Executive level.

Desirable criteria

• A depth of understanding of climate change policy, economics and politics, especially at the State level here in Western Australia.
• An understanding of governance, legislation and compliance requirements of non-government organisations, particularly Registered Environmental Organisations (REO).
• Experience in leading on-ground community engagement and organising efforts on strategic issues that unite communities across traditional political and cultural divides.
• An understanding of grassroots community and NGO advocacy and activism on climate change and related issues.
• Experience in engaging and developing relationships with grantmakers, funding partners to grow capacity and resources.
• Experience working alongside farmers, workers, regional communities, and Aboriginal people in Western Australia
