Community Legal WA

About Community Legal WA

As the peak body for the community legal sector in WA, Community Legal WA is charged with building capacity and expertise, and promoting effectiveness and efficiency, across our 26 member centres. Through law reform campaigns, advocacy, operational support and community and legal professional education, our staff contribute to a variety of human rights and social justice projects.

About the Role

The CEO of Community Legal WA is the most visible and influential figure in the WA community legal sector.

As the face of the Community Legal WA you will be representing the hundreds of lawyers, advocates and other workers and volunteers at the 26 Community Legal Centres (CLCs) across Western Australia which provide vital legal and other services to tens of thousands of vulnerable people each year.

With outstanding communication skills, you will collaborate closely with member CLCs so that you can be their voice at a State and National level. You will use your proven negotiation skills with stakeholders, key influencers, funders and the media to tell their client stories and achieve positive outcomes for the sector.

Building proactive partnerships, you will attract funding from a range of sources, prepare and manage business plans and budgets and be a catalyst for innovative policy, practice and service delivery. Leading an experienced team of staff and reporting directly to an engaged Board, the successful candidate will have real scope to shape a new narrative for our professional community.

This position is based in our Perth office, with some travel around WA and nationally. Benefits include flexible hours and generous salary packaging. The position can be structured as part-time (at least 0.8 FTE) or full-time.

Do You Have What We Are Looking For?

To fill this varied, exciting role, we are looking for candidates with the demonstrated ability to:

  • Cultivate strong relationships, particularly with members, funders and policy-makers.
  • Provide leadership to and advocate on behalf of the sector.
  • Adapt quickly and effectively to changing goals and immediate and urgent priorities.
  • Formulate and deliver public policy goals.
  • Identify and carry out research and other strategic projects to benefit a diverse community of practice.
  • Manage competing priorities with equanimity, focus and impact.
  • Source diverse funding streams and deliver on projects to the benefit of the sector.
  • Manage all operational aspects of a modern peak body, including finance, HR, staff leadership and Board accountability.
  • Understand and pursue the needs of a legal community dedicated to social justice, human rights and a strong future for our client communities.
