Chronic Pain Australia (CPA) is a non-profit and non-government health promotion organisation founded in 2001 by a group of committed volunteers seeking better health outcomes for people living with chronic pain.

Our vision is to improve the quality of life of those Australians who live with chronic pain. We believe no Australian should live with chronic pain in isolation or without access to resources, support, and affordable high-quality healthcare. Chronic Pain Australia is dedicated to supporting Australians in effectively managing their pain to preserve their dignity and self-respect, regardless of age, gender, culture, belief, rural or regional location or socio-economic background.

The Chronic Pain Australia Community Forum is a key part of our work is the CPA Community Forum, an online community where people can connect, learn and support each other. There are currently over 3000 people from Australia and beyond engaging with this service.

This forum could not exist without our wonderful online moderators who ensure forum members are safe, connected and supported with accurate information. Our volunteer moderators are special people with true empathy and understanding of what it is like to live with chronic pain. They work with CPA staff and volunteers to create a community for people living with, or supporting a friend or family
member, from chronic pain.

We are seeking 3 -4 volunteers with a lived experience of chronic pain to assist with moderation and delivery of this critical service.

DESCRIPTION: The primary responsibility for our volunteer online moderators is to create a supportive community that fosters social connection and a sense of belonging. This is a critical role that sits right at the coalface of the chronic pain experience, so moderators must be accepting and able to connect with people from all walks of life in an authentic, positive and engaging manner. Our volunteer moderators all work from home with training provided by CPA.

Responsibilities include -

  • Reviewing and moderating all user-generated content and user profiles including questions, comments and new forum threads and liaise with CPA staff if escalation is required
  • Provision of links to accurate information or service providers where appropriate
  • Addressing technical questions from forum users when they arise
  • Supporting and engaging forum users who may need special assistance including redirection to other pain or crisis services
  • Working closely with other CPA moderators, staff and advisors to ensure the forum is always serving the needs of the broader chronic pain community

Essential skills -

  • Lived experience of chronic pain (either in yourself or from being a carer)
  • A general understanding of chronic pain management
  • Good written communication skills
  • A basic knowledge of computers and comfort with navigating tech platforms and the online environment - Own equipment required
  • Reliable - Own home internet access
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings
  • Previous experience in online moderation would be valuable but not essential as training will be provided.
