The Centre for Women & Co. exists to deliver responsive, high quality and holistic women services to the Logan and Redland Regions, encompassing domestic and family violence support services and women’s health and wellbeing support services.

The Centre for Women & Co. is seeking a passionate, highly experienced Children’s Counsellor to join our team in a part-time position until the 30th June 2022.

The Role

The Children Specialist Counsellor’s role is to provide counselling to children and young people aged less than 18 years who have been exposed to domestic and family violence. The role is to also address the impacts of trauma on children and young people using an integrated theoretical counselling approach, the development of safe therapeutic relationships and, in collaboration with the rest of the team, to nurture healthy relationships within the family unit.

You will collaborate in the development and facilitation of therapeutic groups for children, young people, families and parents to assist with developing strong community engagement and education. You will work collaboratively with team members and other agencies to develop appropriate and innovative responses to violence with the Logan Community.

About You

You will have highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, enabling you to communicate effectively and build rapport with a broad range of people and most importantly children and young people.

You will have extensive experience, understanding and a passion for working with children.

Your demonstrated ability to work effectively together with a willingness and commitment to provide optimum operational and service delivery will enable you to work collaboratively and effectively with team members, clients and other organisations across our communities.

Key Selection Criteria

  1. Possession of relevant tertiary qualifications in Counselling, Social Work, Psychology or approved Human Services field.
  2. Minimum 2 years’ experience and skills in working effectively with and conducting counselling and group work for children and young people who have or are currently experiencing Domestic and Family Violence, utilising evidences based counselling practices including but not limited to play therapy, creative/expressive therapies, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
  3. Demonstrated understanding and ability/proficiency in early childhood development and attachment theory.
  4. A working understanding of current child protection legislation (Child Protection Act 1999).
  5. Capacity to effectively and appropriately engage with children’s families (Carers and or guardians).
  6. Well-developed interpersonal, verbal, written and communication skills including proficiency in the preparation and management of client files and case notes.
  7. Demonstrated experience participating in reflective practice and willingness to participate in a collaborative and supportive manner with the team and capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.
  8. Understanding of and alignment with a feminist framework and its practical application in a progressive workplace, incorporating demonstrated knowledge of the social, political and gendered nature of Domestic and Family Violence and Women’s Wellbeing.
  9. Current Queensland Driver’s License, Police Check and a working with Children Check/Blue Card
