CERA conducts research to discover the causes of eye disease, find new ways to detect and prevent vision loss and develop new treatments to save and restore sight.

Overview

The Lions Eye Donation Service (LEDS) coordinates the retrieval and preparation of corneas and sclera for transplantation and research across Victoria and Tasmania. The LEDS team run a 24/7 year-round service.

The Transplant Coordinator, working closely in a small team environment, is responsible for duties related to the collection of eye tissue from donors, and subsequent preparation of transplant of tissue. You will be required to obtain information and determine eligibility of potential donors and obtaining consent and being the contact for Next-of-Kin and hospital staff. You will perform surgery to recover donated eye tissue following standard procedures, and you will allocate eye tissue according to the relevant policy.

When on call the Transplant Coordinator will be required to take and respond to calls regarding donation cases, and prepare to travel to the donation hospital within the logistical and timing requirements of the procedure. This may require a call out during weeknights (or preparation for travel the next morning), and call outs during the weekend. You will be compensated for this in the form of on-call and call-out rate allowances.

About You

This role would suit someone who likes to work independently and has the flexibility to work within a small, 24/7 on-call team. The ideal candidate will have a relevant Undergraduate degree in Orthoptics, Optometry, Nursing or a Science disciple and must hold a current and valid driver’s license. You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and have a sensitive and mature approach. You will have an aptitude for surgical and technical skills and an ability to learn and follow strict protocols.
