Work First is a unique suite of person-centred disability employment services that support companies and individuals to make inclusive employment possible for people with a disability. Borne out of years of research and practice evidence and driven by the need to improve disability employment outcomes, Work First works with individuals and companies to make employment and careers possible. Our services are available to companies through the Work First Corporate program and to individuals who are self-managed clients of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Work First is the disability employment and mental health service of the Centre for Disability Employment Research and Practice. It is where CDERP illustrates how theory can become practice in the delivery of innovative services to individuals and businesses.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re looking for someone with a passion for disability employment and counselling. Our program is very much client-driven. It’s not a traditional counselling service role, as you will under the direction of our program managers in partnership with the Disability Employment Specialists to support clients and their families on the employment journey. Your role will encompass working with clients to support their journey to employment by supporting them to understand the workplace, develop appropriate behaviours, address anxiety about work, and implement goals driven by our self-determination program.

Employment is more than just the individual it’s also about the family, so you will undertake family counselling and support as directed.

Our Workplace Counsellors are comfortable with diversity, compassionate, and exceptional listeners. Their attention to detail, self-confidence, and a good sense of humour is critical to success.

SOME OF WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

  • Working with clients on career, study, and employment options by obtaining and examining information relevant to their abilities and needs
  • Providing information and resources to assist clients with job-seeking skills
  • Conducting counselling interviews with individuals and family groups
  • Assisting the understanding and adjustment of attitudes, expectations, and behaviour to develop more effective interpersonal and workplace relationships
  • Presenting alternative approaches and discussing the potential for behaviour change
  • Support the implementation of our Self-Determination program
  • Working in partnership with other staff

  • Like to work outdoors – most of our work is in the field
  • Degree qualified in the appropriate field

LOCATION

This role would suit someone living in the eastern suburbs or outer east of Melbourne, as the person we employ will work primarily with clients in this region.
