The Cancer Prevention and Advocacy Division (CPA) leads the organisation's work in health promotion and cancer prevention helping Australians to reduce their risk of cancer. We aim to reduce smoking, improve sun protection behaviours, increase the proportion of people that are a healthy weight, reduce harmful levels of alcohol consumption, and support improved screening program participation.

The role

This role takes lead responsibility for managing the development, coordination, implementation and evaluation of community-facing cancer screening projects and campaigns. It provides strategic leadership to establish and grow Cancer Council's capacity to support the community's participation in cancer screening programs, particularly the bowel cancer screening program.

The position engages with key internal stakeholders, forms key partnerships with external stakeholders and the community. The role works closely with the Director, Cancer Prevention & Advocacy, the Community Engagement Division (CE) and Cancer Research Division (CRD), as well as key relevant stakeholders across all Cancer Councils.

How?

Key responsibilities during this maternity leave cover will be:

  • Identifying funding opportunities, writing and submitting CPA-led grant applications, collaborating with CRD on research grant applications and supporting CE to identify partnerships and apply for funding opportunities.
  • Maintaining key external stakeholder relationships, and advocating on key screening issues, including bowel - colonoscopy wait times, cervical - nurse practitioner and self-collection issues
  • Maintaining effective internal coordination with key internal stakeholders across CE, CRD, M&F and CISS including managing the cross-divisional Screening Working Group (includes membership from all mission areas), administrating approximately 10 meetings of 1-2 hours across the year, chairing 50% of meetings (shared with CE) and inviting key guests to contribute as needed
  • Supporting and expanding the reach of national and NSW screening program promotion efforts
  • Ensuring all community-facing screening-related content is delivered accurately and in a timely manner across all channels, representing CCNSW in media and conducting a website review / update across all areas of screening and early detection and content development for resources delivered via CE
  • Planning, implementing and evaluating the CCNSW Screening Strategy, including annual planning and budgeting, membership of CPA Divisional Leadership Team.
  • Representing CCNSW and contribution to national agenda via the CCA Cancer Screening & Immunisation Committee and relevant sub-groups

Who are you?

This is a pivotal stakeholder management role. You need to be able to adapt and tailor your approach, while being able to drive successful outcomes that align to the strategies in place.

You will also have:

  • Experience in health promotion and social marketing to achieve behaviour change
  • Experience in scoping, developing, leading and evaluating projects within community organisations in order to influence health behaviour change at a population level
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, particularly in writing program reports and delivering presentations
  • Ability to critically appraise, interpret and translate published evidence into practice
  • Demonstrated success in strategy development and execution
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and engage internal and external stakeholders to achieve project goals
  • High level negotiation and problem-solving skills, specifically in working between various sectors of government and with community organisations
  • Effective project management skills including the ability to allocate resources and manage multiple partnerships and projects concurrently
  • Experience in developing and submitting funding applications for project and/or research grants
