As leaders in the provision of high quality, evidence-based information for patients and carers, this pivotal team produces the Understanding Cancer series which comprises more than 60 printed and digital information resources

The Role

A recent resignation, after 4 years in the role, has created a unique opportunity for you to join a collaborative and supportive team, the Cancer Information Unit, part of the wider Cancer Information and Support Services Division.

The Cancer Information Unit produces printed, online and podcast information resources for people with cancer, their families, carers and friends, including the national Understanding Cancer series of booklets and The Thing About Cancer podcasts. The unit also provides editorial and design services to other units within the division.

Reporting to the Lead Graphic Designer, this position is key to the ongoing production of the national Understanding Cancer series of patient information booklets and fact sheets.

The key purposes of this role are:

  • To design, layout, illustrate and prepare for print the Understanding Cancer series of booklets and fact sheets for cancer patients, and their family and friends.
  • To work closely with the Lead Designer and editorial team to ensure that resources are optimised for legibility, reader comprehension and engagement

Detail

Based in our Woolloomooloo office, key responsibilities will be:

  • Design and prepare artwork for the Understanding Cancer series of booklets and factsheets as agreed with the Lead Graphic Designer and Cancer Information Unit Manager.
  • Design new infographics and anatomical illustrations for booklets and factsheets as required.
  • Closely follow the design and brand style guidelines.
  • Work with relevant editor to check accuracy of printer’s proofs before approving for print.
  • Work closely with the Cancer Information Unit’s team of editors and Lead Graphic Designer to ensure the design of all printed and online information for patients and carers is high quality, on brand, consistent and engages consumers and health professionals.
  • Liaise with printer and attend press checks as required.
  • Check print samples to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Prepare files for eBook conversion and images for online applications.
  • Design and prepare artwork for marketing and other materials for other units within Cancer Council NSW, as required.
  • Ensure all design jobs are completed within the scheduled timeframes, and project milestones are met.
  • Take responsibility for archiving artwork for completed jobs

What will set you up for success?

As a confident Graphic Designer with a collaborative approach, you will bring:

  • Tertiary or industry relevant qualifications in graphic design..
  • Demonstrated experience in the design of multi-page publications, including books and/or magazines (minimum 5 years)
  • Demonstrated high level of proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite on a PC platform (especially InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat Pro).
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to build strong working relationships quickly.
  • Demonstrated illustration skills
  • Experience in working with style guides and brand guidelines.
  • Experience in working with printers, including checking hard copy and online proofs and press checking.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the print production process and experience of working with printers to achieve optimal results.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and conceptualise creative briefs.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects while adhering to strict deadlines.
