Who are we?

As part of the wider Finance, Strategy & Operations Division, the legal team are responsible for:

  • Establishing and maintaining policies and processes to identify, assess, monitor and manage legal compliance
  • Providing advice and support to multiple stakeholders
  • Vendor contract review
  • Reviewing confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements; IP Agreements; and agreements where CCNSW is the recipient of income
  • Bequests and estates where CCNSW are a beneficiary
  • Over and above contracts and bequests, the team receive general inquiries regarding legal issues such as privacy, insurance, fraud, or misuse of our IP

The role

Based primarily in the Woolloomooloo office, reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the General Counsel provides advice and support to the Executive, the Board, managers and staff on all matters that have legal implications or present a legal risk.

The General Counsel also establishes and maintains policies and processes to identify, assess, and manage organisation-wide legal compliance.

With the support of a Legal Counsel, key aspects of your role will be:

  • Develop, implement, manage and review systems to minimise risk and ensure organisation-wide compliance with all applicable Acts, Regulations, Codes, policies and other legal requirements.
  • Regularly review all internal policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
  • Draft, review and approve all contractual agreements, and assist business owners in negotiating with customers, suppliers, service providers, retailers, independent contractors, partners, research collaborators and other stakeholders.
  • Provide strategic advice to the Board, Executive, managers and staff on legal and risk issues associated with events, publications, campaigns and other initiatives.
  • Draft, review and approve all property leases, and manage any disputes that arise in the operation of such leases.
  • Manage the protection of organisation’s intellectual property, including trademarks.
  • Manage the settlement of bequests made to the organisation, including contested estates.
  • Provide legal advice to internal stakeholders on laws and policies relevant to charitable and not-for-profit organisations.
  • Provide strategic legal advice on policy and law reform initiatives to reduce cancer risk in the NSW population.
  • Regularly monitor and report on changes to relevant legislation and regulations, taking or advising on appropriate action to respond to such changes.
  • Manage relationships with external legal advisers to obtain accurate, timely and cost-effective legal advice where required.
  • Implement systems and processes to track internal allocation of instructions, briefing to external legal advisers and delivery of tasks.
  • Participate in relevant committees as directed by the COO to ensure organisation-wide compliance with relevant legal requirements and to minimise risk.

Who are we looking for?

  • Appropriate level of practical experience supported by tertiary qualifications in law and current unrestricted practicing certificate.
  • Sound negotiating and drafting skills.
  • Proven track record in managing legal activities gained either in a law firm or in-house
  • Enjoyment in
  • Proven experience interpreting and negotiating contracts with suppliers.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong service orientation and interpersonal capability,
  • Sound commercial judgement and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders
  • Experience in property law would be advantageous
  • Previous knowledge of Wills and Succession Law and knowledge of Privacy Law and Charitable Fundraising Legislation will be looked on favourably.
